In the common imagination, now Robert Downey Jr. represents the face of Tony Stark, the unforgettable Iron Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, not many know, that the actor previously auditioned for get the role of a famous DC villain. The actor himself told the anecdote during a meeting with the public at the American Cinemateque. The curious coincidence regarding the event is that the director and protagonist of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are also involved in the story, Downey Jr.’s adventure companions in the aforementioned film. In fact, way back in 2005, Robert Downey Jr. proposed to be part of the cast of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The role for which Robert Downey Jr. did the casting was not that of the protagonist Bruce Wayne, but that of the very bad Scarecrowa role that was later covered by his colleague Cillian Murphy!

Robert Downey Jr. jokingly recalled the defeat by his colleague and co-star in Oppenheimer specifying that the director, Nolan, did not seem particularly enthusiastic during their meeting:
I remember meeting him for tea and thinking, “I don’t think he’s really inclined to do this interview.” He was polite and all, but you can tell when someone, in a way… isn’t going anywhere.
We can still be satisfied with how things turned out in the end. Cillian Murphy landed the role of Scarecrow in the Dark Knight trilogy, while Robert Downey Jr. then entered our hearts as Tony Stark just three years later. The actor finally got to be directed by Nolan and reunited with his colleague 18 years later in Oppenheimer’s spectacular staging. The film is in pole position for the 2024 Oscar nominations, in fact it obtained 13 nominations. All that remains is to wait for the night between 10 and 11 March, when the prestigious ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
