The second generation of BMW X2 – more distinctive, sporty and future-oriented – is ready to make its debut from March 2024. In addition to the evolutionary leap of the SUV coupé, the progressive character of the new model is also manifested in its first fully electric variant, the BMW iX2. The design of the new BMW X2
The new BMW X2 It has a distinctive and highly expressive design, clearly distinguishing itself from its compact counterpart, the BMW X1. This new model defines itself as an authentic Sports Activity Coupé, presenting an aesthetic with dynamic lines and a generous surface area that captures attention. There BMW X2 it has undergone a significant increase in dimensions, with a length of 4,554 millimeters, a rise of 194 millimeters, a width of 1,845 millimeters and a height of 1,590 millimeters.
This evolutionary leap translates into an extended wheelbase and wider tracks, helping to improve internal space both for the five occupants and for the boot, which now offers a maximum load capacity varying from 560 to 1,470 litres, depending on the variant of the model. In the case of the fully electric variant, the BMW iX2boot space varies from 525 to 1,400 litres.
The car’s profile features a roofline that flows continuously towards the rear, where the arched wheels and muscular shoulders emerge prominently. The specific horizontal lines of the rear lights amplify the sporty character, accompanied by a Gurney-type spoiler and an eye-catching rear bumper. The exterior design certainly stands out and can be divisive: the clean, flat lines, especially at the rear, may not appeal to everyone. Matter of taste.
The BMW X2 M35i xDrive – which we tried in ours test drive – is characterized by specific M elements, including the exhaust pipes integrated into the rear bumper, giving it a particularly dynamic aura. An M Sport package is also available for other model variants, including the BMW iX2offering aerodynamically optimized exterior details.
The interiors of the new X2 range
The interior of the BMW X2 It offers a premium and modern ambience with details that underline its sporty character. The articulated dashboard, which houses the BMW Curved Display, is flanked by a “floating” armrest equipped with an integrated control panel. The front of the center console features two cup holders and a smartphone storage compartment with indirect lighting and wireless charging.
The innovative seats, also available in the perforated Veganza variant and in Vernasca leather with eye-catching quilting, offer sophisticated alternatives to traditional fabric upholstery. Customers can further personalize the driving experience with options such as sports seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function, lumbar support and massage function.
As for space, the rear part is a bit uncomfortable, especially in the electric one. The rear seats of the BMW iX2In fact, they are 5 cm higher due to the battery underneath, which causes passengers to travel with their legs slightly raised and squashed.
Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, the BMW Maps navigation system, a leather sports steering wheel, automatic tailgate opening, four USB-C ports and a 12V power outlet in both the center console and in the trunk. The number of driver assistance systems and digital services has been significantly increased compared to the previous model.
Technology and infotainment of the BMW X2 and iX2
The infotainment system is based on the BMW Operating System 9, with which you can interact via the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is an advanced platform that opens up a vast range of customizable digital services. Thanks to BMW ConnectedDrive updates, customers can experience selected features free of charge for a month, with the option to subscribe to them later for a fixed period.
As for advanced options, the Augmented View function is offered as an add-on for the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system. Other features include a personal eSIM for 5G mobile technology, BMW Digital Key Plus, BMW ID functionality and standard smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, all available in the new BMW X2 e iX2.
The engine: the test drive of the BMW X2 and iX2
For our test drive on the roads of the west coast of Portugal we tried both BMW X2 e iX2the thermal in the motorization M35i2.0 turbo petrol four-cylinder that delivers 300 HP and 400 Nm, for a 0-100 covered in 5.4″ and a top speed of 250 km/h.
With all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the BMW X2 M35i it is certainly the sportiest version, which translates into the driving experience, steering and suspension.
The sporty driving, which can be softened thanks to the comfort mode, is perfect for those who like to have fun on the road, even if the steering calibration is sometimes excessive, especially in the tightest bends. Despite a rather smooth ride overall, it is worth noting the brake pedal, which for the less experienced requires a bit of practice and getting used to: very hard and with a short stroke, if it is the perfect solution for sporty driving, it could cause some problem of adaptability to daily driving in the city.
BMW iX2 xDrive30
Better there BMW iX2, which we tested in the xDrive30 version at 230 kW, therefore 313 HP, and 494 Nm, all-wheel drive 0-100 km/h in 5.6″ and maximum speed of 180 km/h. The 64.9 kWh battery promises a range of around 450 km, with the possibility of maximizing efficiency via the Max Range.
The BMW iX2 it is very agile and solid, and offers a much more stable and smooth driving experience than its thermal companion. Power delivery is very dynamic based on the driving mode chosen, just as the steering is much lighter and easier to handle.
How much does it cost? Prices of BMW X2 and iX2
The latest additions to the range X2 di BMW they will arrive on the world market starting from March 2024 with the electric version iX2 xDrive 30the high performance thermal X2 M35i, a second petrol option sDrive20i and a diesel sDrive18d. During the summer of 2024, however, the range will be enriched with a second electric variant and another diesel model.
As for prices, the price list starts from 46.100 euro for the sDrive 20i, a 156 HP mild-hybrid petrol, which reaches 50,050 euros for the M Sport, while the M35i xDrive that we tried costs 63.200 euro. For electric cars, the iX2 eDrive 20 with a single engine and a power of 150 kW costs 49,100 and 53,050 euros, while the iX2 xDrive 30 of our test drive costs from 60.000 a 63.950 euro.
It should be underlined that the basic prices of the range are destined to rise, as many of the “premium” and driving assistance functions are options to be added, such as heated seats, folding mirrors and adaptive cruise control. For the electric version, the more powerful 22 kW charger – compared to the 11 kW of the standard one – is also optional.
