Lately there have been some really serious cases of scandal which left both Formula 1 fans and those who work directly in the field speechless. The most striking case is obviously that of Christian Horner, who was accused of sexually harassing a female employee. An employee that Red Bull even decided to fire. A big scandal, but know that cases like this, especially like the rigged race from President Ben Sulayem is not new stuff for the world of motorsports. There’s been another scandal now almost 20 years ago, where the victim was Felipe Massa, a Brazilian driver of Italian origins. The case concerns the rigged race at Marina Bayway back in 2008.
The cause of Felipe Massa’s complaint to the FIA, what happened?
Let’s go back 16 years and analyze the race again Marina Bay. During the race, the Brazilian driver was demonstrating a perfect performance, but on lap 14 there was an unexpected event: Nelson Piquet Jr he crashed into the wall and that led to the entrance to the Safety Car. This favored his teammate Fernando Alonso who had stopped shortly before and won ahead of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. The Briton gained six points on Massa and prevented him from winning. The race was reanalyzed a year later and they found that Nelson Piquet Jr’s crash into the wall was voluntary, did so at the request of the FIA for fear that his contract would not be renewed. This is why Felipe Massa decided to take the FIA to court and thus to receive nine-figure compensation, all at London court.
