According to the words of Daniel Ahmad, industry analyst, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would have sales well below Square Enix's expectations: let's discover all the details together in this dedicated article
While we are already starting to talk about the third part of the new trilogy dedicated to Final Fantasy VII, we still think back with enormous pleasure to our first journey in Rebirth, which we talked about extensively in a dedicated review (you can find it here). After the “bitter” disappointment of Remake, which was not what we expected in every sense, the second chapter managed to capture us thanks to an incredibly high overall quality. However, according to Daniel Ahmad, the people who purchased Rebirth are much fewer than those of Remake and the game would therefore have had sales well below expectations. Yes, but by how much?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sales: where are we at?
Daniel Ahmad, director of research and analytics at Niko Partners, reportedly said on Twitter:
I don't want to be the one to say it, but Rebirth is performing less than expected in terms of sales. […] It's selling about half of what Remake sold in the same time period and looks like it will have a weaker tail.
Ahmad allegedly obtained this sales data from “equity research reports, which get data from the usual trackers.” To be honest, though, and as some users on Twitter also pointed out in response to Ahmad, the two releases are not remotely comparable. Remake was released when most of the world was in lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was at the end of the life cycle of an ultra-selling console like PlayStation 4, while Rebirth is currently only playable on PS5.
It is also possible that the remake of one of the most important titles in the history of video games initially attracted many players, but some may not have appreciated it as much as the original and therefore chose not to purchase the sequel.
Who knows: for now, sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth don't seem to have met expectations. We await some confirmation or denial from Square Enix. What do you think about it?
