Amazon removes Just Walk Out technology from US stores

Amazon decided to remove the technology Just Walk Out from all its grocery stores Fresh in the United States. The system of automatic checkout, based on cameras and sensors, presented several problems from the beginning, leading the company to rethink its retail strategy.

As The Information reports (via Engadget), the technology has not brought the desired results. Despite the illusion of automation, Just Walk Out actually requires the participation of over 1,000 people in India that monitor camera feeds to ensure accurate checkouts. Furthermore, installing and maintaining the necessary equipment is extremely expensive, which is why the technology has only been adopted in about half of U.S. Fresh stores.

Consumers then encountered several problems while using the system, such as receipts sent hours after purchase and mishandled orders.

Important ones also emerge privacy issuesas the cameras and sensors used can collect biometric customer information, such as body shape and size, for identification and tracking purposes. This led to a class action lawsuit in New York, which accuses Amazon of failing to adequately disclose data collection practices to consumers.

Despite attempts to sell the technology to other retail chains, Amazon has found little interest. Both because it requires infrastructure that many shops don't have. And also because many shops perceive the company as competitor and market disruptor.

Amazon has therefore decided to remove the Just Walk Out technology in all US stores, while they remain in the UK for the time being. Instead, the company plans to introduce smart carts Dash in stores, after a test in several Whole Foods and Fresh stores. A way to avoid queues and avoid checkout, without cameras that recognize users — and people who constantly monitor them.
