In this episode of Anime Breakfast we will see which are the five best series to watch as Halloween approaches: are you ready to scare yourself with cute little girls?
And after a week of (forced) break, our appointment with Anime Breakfast is back again this Sunday. In particular, the Top sub-column returns, which took us from the ten best anime about sports, to the best Sailor Moon characters to date: on Halloween. In this episode we will quickly go and see what are the five best animated series to catch up on in this dark and scary period before the annual party of All Saints. In this case, however, you will not find a ranking and the series will simply be arranged in no particular order. Let’s begin!
Another | Anime Breakfast TOP: five best series to watch on Halloween!
Based on a light novel series written by Yukito Ayatsuji, Another was produced by PA Works and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima. The plot revolves around Koichi Sakakibara, a young high school student who transfers to Yomiyama North Middle School. Something is definitely wrong with his class, and his companions seem to be hiding a dark secret. Equally dark is the curse that surrounds the structure and in particular the 3-3 class and which dates back to a tragic accident that occurred many years earlier. Known and appreciated for its dark atmosphere and constant suspense, as well as some truly disturbing death scenes, Another is highly recommended this Halloween season!
Higurashi no naku koro ni (Higurashi When They Cry) | Anime Breakfast TOP: cinque migliori serie da vedere ad Halloween!
One day we’ll tell you about the When They Cry franchise, one day we’ll tell you in detail about Umineko, but this is not the day. In this episode of Anime Breakfast dedicated to the best series to watch on Halloween, however, we couldn’t avoid including the one dedicated to Higurashi. Based on the visual novel by Ryukushi07, Higurashi is set in Hinamizawa, a small village located in a remote area of Japan, which obviously can only hide disturbing secrets linked to ancient traditions. Highly recommended for this period and… watch out for the footsteps you might hear.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls | Anime Breakfast TOP: five best series to watch on Halloween!
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is the animated series based on the RPG video game Corpse Party. Born as an OVA, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls tells of a group of high school students who decide to perform a ritual, called “Sachiko Ever After”, within their school, Kisaragi Academy. A ritual that should maintain their bond of friendship, but that quickly turns into a nightmare when a supernatural force transports them to another dimension, an abandoned elementary school called Heavenly Host Elementary School. So get ready to face vengeful specters, extreme violence and curses condensed into just four episodes. Perfect for Halloween night.
Elfen Lied | Anime Breakfast TOP: five best series to watch on Halloween!
Based on the manga written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto, Elfen Lied was then transposed into an animated series directed by Mamoru Kanbe dated 2004 (what memories!). A mysterious girl with long pink hair and a beautiful pair of horns, named Lucy, escapes from a secret laboratory where she was being held captive. Lucy is a Diclonius, a human mutation with supernatural powers and an innate propensity for violence. During her escape, Lucy suffers a blow to the head that causes her to lose her memory and is found by Kouta, our protagonist and young university student, and her cousin Yuka. In a rather complex script that frames violence, discrimination and dehumanization, Elfen Lied offers many scenes of explicit violence and content mature enough to brighten up your Halloween evening.
Shiki | Anime Breakfast TOP: five best series to watch on Halloween!
Finally, Shiki. Based on the light novel of the same name by Fuyumi Ono, the series is set in a small and quiet Japanese village, Sotoba. However, from one day to the next. the village begins to be shaken by a series of mysterious and inexplicable deaths. As residents begin to think of a curse or an epidemic, local doctor Toshio Ozaki and a young Buddhist priest, Seishin Muroi, begin to investigate. Those responsible could be the Shiki, vampires who feed on the blood of the living. Between morality, xenophobia, fear of death and the fight for survival, this series could be well suited to vampire lovers for Halloween night!
