In this new episode of Anime Breakfast we want to go and relive with you what were, in our opinion, the best anime of 2023: a special year, from which we had so much
2023 has been a particularly prolific year on the entertainment media front. And if we have already talked to you about the best films (here is the complete article!) and the best video games (click here!) of 2023, in this new episode of Anime Breakfast we want to go over with you what were the milestones that, if you haven’t already done so, you absolutely need to catch up on in the world of Japanese animated series this year. In no particular order, because they are all on the same level, the following five Japanese animated series are quite varied. We go from sequels to new IPs, including a sort of remake. Variety that rhymes with quality. Have a good trip!
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End | Anime Breakfast TOP: the best anime of 2023!
Based on the shonen manga by Kanehito Yamada, drawn by Tsukasa Abe, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an anime edited by the Madhouse studio which was brought to Italy by Crunchyroll (you can find it at this link). It’s a fantasy, whose story begins with a group of adventurers who, after a decade of struggle, defeated the Demon King, thus saving the world and all of humanity. The group of heroes is exactly like this anime: atypical. We find the paladin Himmel, the dwarf warrior Eisen, the cleric Heiter and the elven sorceress Frieren, who gives her name to the production and is the real protagonist. We don’t want to reveal any further, just know that being an elf, it is necessary for Frieren to survive her companions. Get your tissues ready.
Attack on Titan Finale | Anime Breakfast TOP: i migliori anime del 2023!
In 2023, one of the most iconic animated series of the last ten years ended. To write this article we went to review how many years have passed since the first season of Attack on Titan aired, and to our surprise it was way back in 2013. After several announcements of various “final seasons” and a change of studio animation (from Wit to Map), finally the last part of Attack on Titan aired in November. We already talked to you about the series in an episode of Anime Breakfast a few weeks ago, you can catch up on it here. Obviously, we won’t tell you anything about the ending. We can only warn you: it’s the end of an era.
Oshi no Ko – My Star
We completely change genre with Oshi no Ko, a series based on the manga written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokohari. It is, conceptually, a Seinen that skillfully explores the competitive, and often dark, world of Japanese Idols (here is some technical information). The animated adaptation aired in the summer season of 2023 ed was created by the Doga Kobo studio. The plot follows Ryuuichi Naruhodou, a middle-aged man who discovers he has a daughter named Tsubasa, who is passionate about the world of Idol, where the girls’ growth and rise in popularity is determined by aggressive fan support. Initially reluctant, Ryuuichi tries to enter this world, initially exploring it tentatively. An excellent series that describes complex dynamics beyond the basic one, such as the parent-child relationship. Highly recommended.
Trigun Stampede
Putting your hand on great cults to make reboots or remakes, as we know, always makes fans shudder. However, those who loved the Trigun franchise and want to approach Stampede, the animated series created by the Orange studio and available on Crunchyroll at this link, can sleep peacefully: the series works, and how. Focused on Vash, the humanoid typhoon that has now become a cult of Japanese animation, the anime unfolds in atmospheres that mix, as do the genres of the series itself: from western to cyberpunk, passing through a bit of steampunk. Whether you’re a long-time fan or newbie, you absolutely need to pick it up.
Vinland Saga 2
Finally, we want to say a few words about the second season of Vinland Saga. Based on the manga by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga follows the life of Thorfinn, a young Viking determined to avenge his father’s death. Set in the 11th century, the story explores the atrocious war between the Vikings and the English, including political struggles, betrayals and the young man’s desire to find an idyllic place called Vinland. The second season is made up of 24 episodes and continues to narrate Thorfinn’s adventure and also in this case, as for Attack on Titan, there was a switch of animation studio: from Wit to Map. If you are a fan of the genre, or you enjoyed the first season of Vinland Saga, you definitely can’t miss it.
Happy ending and happy beginning!
These were, in our opinion at TechGameWorld.com, the best anime of 2023. A year that has now come to an end, but which acts as a prelude to a 2024 even richer in possible pearls and great releases.
