Inspired by last week’s new sub-column, Anime Breakfast Chara, in which we analyzed the splendid character of Nami from One Piece, we take up the Top sub-column that we touched on in previous episodes and give it a few more ingredients: that is, an Anime Breakfast that explores a ranking about favorite characters from a much-loved anime. Perhaps one of the most loved anime of all time, very popular, but complex and full of meanings, aka Sailor Moon.
In this new episode of Anime Breakfast we want to talk about the most loved characters of the series, but taking into consideration a ranking that has already been decided by the public. This is a survey created by NHK, the Japanese public radio and television service, which concluded in December 2020 by asking the public what their favorite character in the entire Sailor Moon universe was. The complete ranking has fifty positions and today we will take the top ten and comment on them together, just as if we were having a chat at a Sunday brunch!

The complete ranking with fifty positions published by NHK it was decided by the public who were able to vote by responding to the survey. As we can see, it is full of main and secondary characters who have also earned top positions.
Sailor Mercury | Anime Breakfast Top: the most beloved characters of Sailor Moon
Let’s start commenting the tenth and ninth place decided by the public, namely Sailor Mercury and Ami Mizumo. The double position because the survey took into consideration not only the warrior character, but also the one in formal everyday clothes. Appearance that he was highly appreciated by the public and that he put Ami Mizumo in the top ten both as a sailor warrior and as a model student. A very interesting character within such a long anime because he grows together with the viewer in each episode. Also for this reason Ami and Sailor Mercury are so loved: a warrior who never uses physical violence, but limits herself to launching her attacks, at the beginning of the series only to defend herself.
In fact, this made her feel weak, because her “fog bubbles” were only defensive, but then over the course of the episodes, she fully exploits the power of Mercury’s water to transform it into all its states, solid, liquid and gaseous . Ami’s extraordinary intelligence can also be seen in her Sailor warrior profile: she moves first with her mind and then with her actions, giving a lot of strength to her entire group of friends and companions.
Makoto Kino | Anime Breakfast Top: the most loved Sailor Moon characters
Makoto Kino is a strong, determined girl, independent woman who dreams of becoming a flower girl and when she transforms into a warrior Sailor becomes Sailor Jupiter, warrior from the planet of Jupiter, belonging to the group of divine warriors defending the Moon Princess. Physically she is the strongest of her, just as a character, not only as a warrior, in fact her approach is also energetic and apparently aggressive, but in reality she is solitary and very sensitive. She is the penultimate warrior who is recruited within the group and with the predominant green color of her eyes and clothes she is certainly very striking on an aesthetic level.
Sailor Saturn | Anime Breakfast Top: the most loved Sailor Moon characters
Sailor Saturn, in seventh place, is one of the secondary characters, however with a personality and aesthetics such as to confidently enter the top ten. Initially warrior of death and destruction, receives the gift of rebirth and becomes a warrior of rebirth and destruction, always by name of the planet of Saturn. A mysterious, solitary, taciturn warrior, but very powerful and from an animation point of view, of great charm, surrounded by the color purple which gives her a further aura of strength and mystery.
Michiru Kaioh | Anime Breakfast Top: the most loved Sailor Moon characters
We remain with one of the secondary characters on a narrative level, but who has taken up a lot of space in her moments in the series thanks to her role and character. We are talking about Michiru Kaioh, aka Sailor Neptune, who governs the powers of the planet Neptune. Before her warrior transformation, Michiru Kaioh is a very fascinating character, because she brings with her great elegance and a very refined and mature approach to life. An always kind and calm girl, she stands out of the five protagonists who instead they are very chaotic, energetic and rightfully adolescent when they are not sailor warriors. Precisely for this reason she may appear cold and snobbish, but in reality as a warrior she is always ready to sacrifice herself for her other companions and for the salvation of humanity. As a secondary character he is also very loved because his story is intertwined with that of Haruka, who we will talk about in the next lines.
Kou Seiya | Anime Breakfast Top: the most loved Sailor Moon characters
A character who makes his appearance in the fifth season of the anime series, or in the finale of the narrative arc. He enters as a character belonging to the Three Lights musical group, in his transformation he becomes one of the Stalight warriors, belonging to planets outside the solar system and therefore of its warriors. In love with Usagi, or rather the protagonist, he appears self-confident and braggart, but in reality he is very loyal and sensitive. It is precisely his love for Usagi that makes him the protagonist of some of the most emotional and intense scenes, because he is a character who never backs down on an emotional level and is very sure of what he feels.

In fourth position we find Minako, who in her transformation is Sailor Venus, from the planet of Venus, the fifth warrior to join the group of warriors in defense of the Moon Princess. Minako is very similar to Usagi, energetic, chaotic, lazy, latecomer, this makes her a very nice character because she is overwhelming. In terms of graphic animation she is very beautiful and fascinating, even if from a sentimental point of view she doesn’t have much luck and not many lasting stories are dedicated to her.

We finally enter the top 3 of this ranking decided by the fans of the series, but making a small jump in position. In fact, let’s go directly to second place and you will soon discover why. The protagonist, the one who holds together the reins of all the characters and all the episodes, namely Sailor Moon, is found in second place.
An optimal position for a series so full of interesting characters and so long and complex in which the protagonist can often get lost in the narrative universe. Like Sailor Mercury, she is one of the characters who grows the most within the series, because she is born as a warrior rather insecure about all the responsibilities that she finds on her shoulders, but she matures a lot as a leader and as a fighter over the seasons..
Sailor Moon is the character that binds together all the events of the series and also allows the inclusion of other great secondary characters, some of which we have already mentioned in this ranking. Her warrior character is very different from Usagi’s everyday character, who in fact we find in fifteenth place and is certainly more immature and chaotic. A Sailor warrior who over the seasons never holds back in battles and manages to involve all her companions thanks to her spirit of sacrifice and will.
Sailor Uranus | Anime Breakfast Top: the most loved Sailor Moon characters
Sailor Moon does not take first place in the ranking of the most loved characters in the series, but it is held by another secondary character who, in addition to first place, also takes third place. This is Sailor Uranus, or Haruka Tenoh, a technically secondary character whose storyline is intertwined with that of Michiru which we wrote about in sixth place. She is a much loved character, both as a warrior from the planet of Uranus and as a character in everyday guise. The reasons lie precisely in her construction of her and what she brought out within the entire series: that is, an intense, complex and mysterious character. Haruka is often mistaken for a boy by other characters as soon as she appears in the series, because she brings with her an androgynous charm in both her appearance and clothing.
Her relationship with Michiru was one of the most sensational censorships in the history of anime broadcast in Italy, because it was always insisted that hers were just friends, even modifying the dialogues in the dubbing. Instead, the two warriors have a relationship and this becomes more and more evident over the course of the plot, both anime and manga. As a warrior, she has fascinated an entire generation with her “Uranus blow”, which is also overwhelming to see as a movement that almost resembles a dance step. Her aesthetic next to Michiru is of great harmony and balance, therefore making the two characters together even stronger and more convincing.
