Welcome back to the Aperit-Hero format! The column where we talk about the great exploits of our heroes from the world of comics brought back to the cinema or on television: the protagonist of today’s Aperit-Hero is Daryl Dixon, also known as The Last Man Standing
In the previous episode of Aperit-Hero we talked about Wolverine and the curse of his immortality. Today, however, we are talking about a character who never existed in the comics, but was a great addition that greatly improved the quality of the TV series in which he is the protagonist. The protagonist of today’s Aperit-Hero is Daryl Dixon! This, albeit in the comics of The Walking Dead doesn’t exist, he is one of the best characters in the live action TV series, also thanks to the interpretation of Norman Reedus (just out of curiosity, check out his filmography). Let’s analyze the character together and see why he is considered like The Last Man Standing.
Un signor nessuno | Aperit-Hero: Daryl Dixon, The Last Man Standing
We don’t know much about Daryl’s life before the apocalypse, but we do know that, as he says in a dialogue with the character of Beth GreenDaryl it was nobody. From what we can understand from his stories, Daryl lived in a bad place, in a family of drug traffickers. A violent father and an absent mother, with the only person present in his life: his brother Merle Dixonwho taught him to survive and fight, but above all to be strong and independent. His rough and aggressive character in the first seasons was due precisely to a violent past where Daryl had to learn to survive. So let’s say his life it has never been easyhe never enjoyed the pleasures and luxuries of an ordinary child, but he immediately had to learn to protect himself and this led him to don’t trust anyonethus making it a lone wolf.
Also during a dialogue with Beth Green in the fourth season of the series, Daryl reveals to us that he has never had Christmas, birthday, he never had friends to have fun withno one who loved him and treated him with respect. Daryl never had anything from his family, much less from friends he didn’t have. This built the character of a man who doesn’t trust anyone except his brother, always submissive to Merle, always distrustful and suspicious of him. In short words, Daryl was nobody and had nothing before the outbreak of the global pandemic that changed the world and transformed billions of people into zombies.

His life, however, changed when the main protagonist of the series arrived: Rick Grimes. As expected, at the beginning Daryl didn’t trust anyone in the group he was in and was ready to kill anyone who aroused suspicion in him. Things changed just when the sheriff arrived at the small group of survivors. Knowing Rick, in fact, became his best friend. Indeed, perhaps this term is too reductive, because since Merle Dixon’s death, after all their experiences together, Rick called Daryl “Brother“. Rick Grimes represents the turning point in Daryl’s life, so much so that he became his right-hand man, watching over every place they were in and taking care of others by finding supplies or protecting them.
Unfortunately, however, things are not all rosy. Over the course of the seasons, in fact, Daryl first loses the young woman Beth Green, to whom he had become very attached, considering her a close friend, almost as if she were his younger sister. Her death caused another trauma in his heart, but this pushed him to become even more protective of those he loves and also more violent towards those who represent a threat to them. The greatest pain, however, is the death of his best friend Rick. Or rather, apparent death, since we will also have the spin-off on Rick Grimes and Michonne. But the fact is that Daryl he no longer had peace from that moment on, convinced that Rick is still alive and tries in every way to find him, sometimes moving away from the group to look for him.

After the “death” of Rick Grimes and the abandonment of Michonne, who found evidence that her beloved is still alive. the sheriff’s little daughter, Judith Grimes, was left without parents. At this point Daryl becomes a worthy replacement for Rick, practically becoming the new protagonist of the story. He begins to care for Judith, becoming his uncleand takes on all the responsibilities Rick had, protecting her best friend Carol and all his loved ones, among Maggie, Ezekiel, Gabriel, Rosita, Aaron and all the new characters that join them. Become thehero of the storyplanning strategic plans and facing all the threats his group encounters, defending it with drawn sword (or crossbow).
One of Daryl’s big changes is the trust factor. If at the beginning of the series she didn’t trust anyone, albeit at her own pace, she also started to trust Neganthe one who enslaved his group and killed them too Glenn Rhee e Abraham Ford. Despite everything he has done, when Negan sides with them, the two team up to defeat the Whisperersa group of survivors who disguise themselves with faces of the infected to interfere with each other. This is a big step forward, especially when Daryl starts supporting Negan when Maggie Rhee, Glenn’s wife, is still enraged by her husband’s murder. Not only is Daryl able to control his anger, he has also become wiser.
The Last Man Standing
So why Daryl is The Last Man Standing? The answer is very simple: he is the most enduring character in the series. From the first episode he proved himself to be a strong man capable of taking care of himself, but he had a lot to improve on himself. Which he did, he became wiser and calmeralthough it always maintains its da character lonely man. This nature of hers to fend for itself, which she has had since childhood, has made her the more resistant character, almost immortal. No, that’s not an exaggeration, Daryl survived it all, high falls, explosions, hordes of infected, deranged madmen, stabs and arrows. Nothing was able to bring him down. However, living so long in such a dangerous world makes you witness many tragedies and losses, to live a very sad life where you have to enjoy every moment with someone because the next day they might die. Despite immense emotional pain and memories of a nostalgic past, his resilience makes it The Last Man Standing.
