Welcome to this new episode of Aperit-Hero, the weekly column where we talk about our favorite heroes and their great and noble deeds! Today we will talk about a very particular character for this column, a hero that no one would expect due to his appearance and his frightening size: the protagonist of today’s Aperit-Hero is Godzilla, the King of the Monsters!
In the last episode of Aperit-Hero we talked about Loki, the savior of the multiverse, telling his story from beginning to end, from a chaotic villain full of grudges to a hero who sacrifices his life for a greater good. The column continues with a character who, although monstrous, is a hero in all respects, especially if we talk about the Monsterverse version. The protagonist of today’s Aperit-Hero is Godzilla, King of the Monsters!
The birth of a legend | Aperit-Hero: Godzilla, the defender of the Earth
The Monsterverse’s Godzilla stood out from other versions with just one thing: Godzilla is a God. But not an arrogant God who dominates the world and subjugates mankind. No, far from it. Godzilla, in this universe, is a true protector of the human race and the world. This can be seen from the first Monsterverse film, Gareth Edwards’ Godzillareleased ten years ago now, in 2014. The threat is represented by the MUTOs, gigantic and monstrous creatures discovered by Monarch, who want to repopulate the world by reproducing and exterminating humanity. The US military could do absolutely nothing against those creatures, the world was doomed. Or at least, that’s what we thought, until he arrived: Godzilla.
The lizard enters the scene in spectacular fashion, and does so at the exact moment when the MUTOs are wreaking havoc and panic in San Francisco. As Doctor Serizawa said, Godzilla is essential to maintaining order in the world, which is why he convinces the American army not to attack Godzilla, but to let him fight against the two MUTOs, since it represented the only possibility of salvation. This is exactly what happens, because the moment one of the two MUTOs called the other to mate, Godzilla intervened realizing that the two monsters they represented a threat to the world. During the battle, Godzilla manages to defeat them and lets out a roar of victory. Once the creatures were eliminated, the protagonist was called not only King of the Monsters, but as the savior of the Earth. Godzilla, once he made sure that the planet was safe again, left the city and returned to rest in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. This is the beginning of the story of a giant hero.

Another great proof that Godzilla gives that he cares a lot about the order of things and the peace of the creatures that live on Earth is when his greatest adversary arrives: King Ghidorah. This three-headed dragon once again threatens the safety of the Earth by starting to invoke other monsters that he convinces to become his subordinates, forming a real kingdom of monsters, with 17 creatures and even more. What Ghidora creates is a real one reign of terror, kills any creature other than a monster and spares no one. Even when he sees Madisonthe young girl played by Millie Bobby Brown, try to eliminate it without leaving it a chance. In King of the MonstersGodzilla tries several times to save humanity from Ghidora, but the creature is far too strong and the creatures under his command give him a hard time.
This film represents the first time mankind saves Godzilla, when Doctor Serizawa decides to face an area of high radiation to ensure that Godzilla regains his life force and returns to the fight. The touching moment between the two of them, when Serizawa places his hand on Godzilla’s face and Godzilla looks at him, shows that Godzilla is very empathetic towards mankind and considers it essential to maintaining the order of things, which is why he continually fights to prevent the Earth from being devastated. Finally Godzilla and the army team up to fight against Ghidora and his henchmen. The army proves to be very useful in the battle, allowing Godzilla to power up and greatly increase his radiation. In the final battle, the defender of Earth achieves even greater power, transforming into Burning Godzilla and lashing out at Ghidora after eliminating Rodan. Once Ghidora is eliminated and Earth is saved once again, Godzilla becomes the new one King of Monsters.

Godzilla’s character continues to develop in Godzilla VS Kong, the crossover that cinema hasn’t seen for 60 years. Here it seems that Godzilla has totally changed his mind about mankind, because he begins to unleash chaos by destroying everything. Everyone thought that Godzilla, once considered a hero, had changed, disappointing many people who believed in him. But Madison still had faith in Godzillabecause he was following podcasts from a Monarch worker, Bernie Hayes, which with a code name revealed everything that Monarch was hiding. Godzilla was destroying everything because the creator of Monarch wanted to create an exact copy of Godzilla to eliminate the original and prove that man is superior even to the King of the Monsters, this unleashed the fury of Godzilla, who was looking for the laboratories of Monarchs working on the project to stop this crazy plan. Godzilla’s intentions were obviously misunderstood by mankind, which is why they decide to send Kong to fight it.
The two clashed twice, first at sea, where Kong had no hope and finally in Tokyo, where they fought on dry ground. Once again Godzilla wins, but Leave Kong alive. He knows that Kong is not a threat and he knows that he also misunderstood his intentions, this again shows that Godzilla is very empathetic, both with mankind and with Kong. Finally, the project of Doctor Serizawa’s son, Ren, to create a mechanical Godzilla, is fulfilled. Mechagodzilla comes to life and has Ghidora’s consciousness, which is why Ren is unable to control it and dies once he enters the machine. The battle begins and Godzilla once again fights against his rival, but in a mechanical body and with the same abilities as him, including the atomic ray. Godzilla doesn’t do well, which is why Kong decides to help him and together they manage to defeat Mechagodzilla. Godzilla saved the Earth again, but this time he gained an ally.
All Hail The King
Godzilla has a long cinematic history 70 years old and over the course of time there have been various interpretations. However, excluding Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla, Godzilla has recently become one of the good guys. But in the Monstervere he makes a dirty impression, he always fights to protect humanity and the earth, risking his life against other monsters. The new interpretation of Godzilla according to the Legendary is really very interesting and unique, because Godzilla here is not just a hero who defends the planet, but he is a real God that the human race venerated. Godzilla in this universe is a legendary figure, a God that man invoked when he needed help and Godzilla, like his ancestors, has always lent a hand to prevent the world from collapsing. The Godzilla of the Monsterverse is therefore, to all intents and purposes, hero of humanity.
