Apple announces new resources and challenges to introduce students to programming

The Swift Student Challenge di Apple has offered thousands of male and female students around the world the opportunity to show their creativity and acquire concrete skills, useful for their careers and beyond. The next challenge will start in February 2024 and a new category is planned that will recognize the work of 50 Distinguished Winners particularly deserving.

Boys and girls are showing an increasing interest in programming and app development. These skills are considered very useful, and not just for a possible career in the world of technology. From an independent survey conducted in September by YPulse out of a sample of 1000 male and female students in the United States, it emerged that 92% think that learning to program is important and that 94% believe that programming is a fundamental skill for the job market.

To introduce students to app development, Apple collaborates with teachers from around the world. To support the teaching of Swift Playgroundsfour new projects “Programming is for everyone” provide step-by-step resources that help students develop basic skills while creating apps that solve their most pressing problems.

The new ones Apple’s “Programming is for Everyone” projects provide resources that guide students through every step of coding and app development, helping them gain essential skills as they create apps that solve the problems they care about.

Four new projects from Apple’s Swift Student Challenge

  • Design a simple app: Classes can create an app prototype in Keynote to learn the basics of app design, practice rapid prototyping, and gather feedback, following the same procedures as those who develop apps for a living.
  • Create with stacks and shapes: Classes can take their first steps in app development with Swift Playgrounds and program a self-portrait or a piece of art with SwiftUI to learn the basics of interface design.
  • Create custom shapes: Classes can take an app interface to the next level by designing shapes, learning to plot coordinates, and programming custom shapes with SwiftUI and the About Me sample app in Swift Playgrounds.
  • Design an app icon: Classes can learn and practice app design principles to create a memorable app icon that communicates an idea, practice rapid prototyping, gather feedback, and upload the icon to Swift Playground to become part of an app.

How to sign up for the Swift Student Challenge

A February 2024male and female students will have 3 weeks to send their projects for the Swift Student Challenge. To receive a notification when the Challenge starts, simply register on the official website.

Out of 350 total winners, 50 will be awarded as Distinguished Winners and next summer they will be invited to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, to get to know each other and meet the Apple team. Each winner will receive a one-year membership in the Apple Developer Program, which allows them to submit apps to the App Store and receive support from Apple.
