Autonomous driving in Italy: tests continue on the motorway

They continue to test autonomous driving in Italy, the experimentation of this new driving method continues to move forward and they should soon integrate it into our country

The news comes directly from Autostrade per l’Italia, which had already started testing in July 2023. Just recently, autonomous driving is becoming more and more common, for example Goodyear and Gatik have started using smart tires for deliveries. The first test consisted of tackling a long open road 20 kmon the A26, without galleries. In the second test, carried out at the end of October, automatic driving was tested for 30 km, still on the same motorway, but this time passing through the Valsesia tunnel. Now they have carried out a third test, in which they continue on a section open to traffic. For the test they used a Maserati MC20 Cielo which the Polytechnic of Milan has specifically modified. With these tests, it seems that we will soon have autonomous driving in Italy.

Autonomous driving in Italy is close

So what are these tests for? Autostrade per l’Italia revealed to us that they are carrying out all these tests to verify how good the car is she is precise and able to understand what surrounds her, between vertical and horizontal signs and GNSS satellite coverage. Thanks to the data acquired, the research and innovation center Motion will be able to understand what they are technologies to be included in the road network to allow cars to travel in complete safety. Autostrade per l’Italia is in fact equipping some motorway sections with technology capable of warning in advance of the presence of dangers, such as construction sites or queues.

The next test will be done in Valsesia gallery in the next months. The reason they chose the tunnel is to verify the reliability of the precision positioning of the car which will be enabled by the antennas in the tunnel. This system will in fact serve to maintain the autonomous driving of the car even in the absence of satellite signal, as can happen in a tunnel. All these initiatives and tests are part of the program Mercurywith which the company is experimenting and developing advanced solutions to continue the development of autonomous driving.
