Figures in hand, Barbie is officially the highest grossing film worldwide of 2023, having just unseated Super Mario Bros. – The film
Let’s take a look at the obvious and less obvious numbers of Barbie’s global success. In fact, presented as a phenomenon even before its release, it did not disappoint and further heated up this torrid summer with record takings. So, if it was unofficial and obvious, now we have the officiality of the cold numbers: With $1,381,000,000 in worldwide box office revenue, Barbie broke Super Mario Bros.’s previous annual record of $1,359,515,023.. We will now be waiting for a work that can undermine this record, even if Barbie’s record will hardly be touched up. Because of the strike SAG-AFTRAIndeed, many studios are starting to postpone blockbusters scheduled for the year. Oppenheimer on the other hand, despite the enormous success in Italy, has lost the challenge of Barbienheimer on a global level. So it can be said that this Warner Bros. feature film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, will have no other rivals until the end of the calendar year.
Barbie: takings globally
With $609.5 million raised domestically, Barbie it is almost in the top 10 of the highest grossing films of all time in the USA, naturally without taking inflation into account. Looking at the number of spectators, Barbie would hover around 55th-54th place: a less bombastic but still noteworthy position. With 30,976,403 euros here in Italy, Barbie is instead the second biggest success since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, surpassed only by Avatar: The Water Way. However, the Mattel doll has already surpassed the 30,282,559 collected in 2019 by Avengers: Endgame, but not the 37,506,094 totaled in Italy by the remake of The Lion King in the same year.
At European level, the markets in which Barbie is recording the best results are in order of England (119.5 million dollars), Germany (54.9), France (43.6) and Spain (35.7). The numbers of Mexico are also excellent (54.2). Australia (54.7) dominates in the Pacific, where the normally lively South Korean market has instead shown a certain coldness towards the proposal, apparently for reasons related to the feminist message. The same message, on the other hand, surprised Chinese women, an important driving force to guarantee the film 35,100,000 dollars so far. A success that is still pleasing, in the hope that cinema can continue on this path.
