Our top 10

10 – The haunted house | Halloween on Disney Plus

Based on an iconic attraction found in every Disneyland theme park, The Haunted House came to life in this film. Eddie Murphy is a real estate agent who takes his family to see a mansion in the hopes of striking a great deal. However, they are soon trapped inside by a storm and suddenly discover the ghostly story behind those walls.

This film is closer to comedy than horror. Besides Eddie Murphy, Terence Stamp, Jennifer Tilly, Marsha Thomason and Nathaniel Parker are also present. A film also appreciated by critics, it received numerous nominations and awards, winning a Young Artist Awards for Best Young Supporting Actress at Aree Davis.

9 – Maleficent | Halloween su Disney Plus

Re-reading of Sleeping Beauty. The young Maleficent is a beautiful woman with a pure soul. She works to defend the kingdom from invaders, falling in love with the prince. But the latter’s betrayal turns his heart into a piece of ice. The newborn Aurora, daughter of King Stephen and the queen, will pay the price, upon whom Maleficent will hurl the well-known prophecy.

But this is not the story of Sleeping Beauty but that of Maleficent, a victim who, when she grows up, will find a way to overcome the evil inflicted on her by those she loved. Excellent fantasy aesthetic, combined with the charisma of Angelina Jolie, give the film an appreciable personality and a medieval setting that somehow recalls the gothic lines of other times. A good film, at times inspired, which got a bit lost with the sequel. All in all, however, to see, especially on the occasion of the night of the witches.

8 – Fright Night – The vampire next door

Charley Brewster, a senior high school student, has a beautiful girlfriend and nerdy friend who is a little ashamed in tow. He lives with his mother in a quiet house near which the young and charming Jerry Dandrige settles. Soon, suspicions about the newcomer’s dark nature turn into evidence, thus forcing the boy to start one frightening fight against what will prove to be a centuries-old vampire. Helping him in the difficult hunt will be Peter Vincent, a phony television illusionist.

Halfway between horror and comedy, always at the risk of looking like neither, this film is actually ambitious, not only for the rich cast, but also for the construction that only at times seems to ask. too much to himself. Remake of the 90’s cult Vampire Slayer, with a more horrifying but humorous streak, the film is highly recommended for Halloween night.

7 – Hocus Pocus | Halloween su Disney Plus

This 1993 film starring three wacky 300-year-old witches, the Sanderson sisters, is truly a Halloween classic. After as many teens accidentally bring the trio back to life over the Halloween holiday, witches begin to resurrect old friends from the past.

When a child’s beloved dog dies, the child cannot go through life without him. After learning from his science teacher that even after death the muscles respond to electricity, the boy thinks well of resurrecting him as happened to the famous Frankenstein monster. In this animated film, in black and white, with the unmistakable signature of Tim Burton, Frankenstein meets Lassie for a strangely funny story about man’s best friend.

The film received numerous nominations including Best Animated Film for Tim Burton at the Oscars, Best Animated Film at the Golden Globes and Best Animated Film at the BAFTAs. The awards instead are Best Animated Film and Best Score to Danny Elfman at the 2013 Saturn Awards.

4 – 28 days later | Halloween on Disney Plus

Pure horror, shot in a ghostly and at times unrecognizable England. During a raid, a group of animal rights activists bursts into a laboratory where some chimpanzees are subjected to forced viewing of violent images. The researcher studying the guinea pigs warns activists that the animals are affected by a dangerous and unknown virus. However, the members of the group decide to free the animals, from which they are immediately attacked. 28 days later, Jim wakes up in a spooky and deserted London. This is just the beginning of an adventure with terrifying implications.

After Trainspotting, Danny Boyle returns to hit the mark, with a low cost but high quality horror. Nothing original, mind you, with an exceptional sense of rhythm, good interpretations, excellent editing and a remarkable soundtrack. More than a few thrills are guaranteed.

3 – Don’t look under the bed

Not looking under the bed has one thing that all other Disney movies don’t have: it’s really scary. In addition to addressing serious topics (such as disease and cancer), he never misses an opportunity to get off the ground unusually dark atmospheres, also thanks to particularly accurate special effects.

A truly nightmare film for those who saw the film on its release in 1999 and the public reaction also led to heated complaints from parents who after the premiere complained about the presence of scenes that were too scary for children. What better occasion to recover it than Halloween?

2 – Jennifer’s Body | Halloween su Disney Plus

In a flashback location, the young Needy recalls how she ended up in a solitary cell of a psychiatric institution. Some time ago, in Devil’s Kettle, the small provincial town where she lived, she was friends with Jennifer, the school sex bomb. Although engaged to Chip, the classic good guy, the inconspicuous Needy is prey to a boundless admiration for Jennifer, so much so that she is essentially dominated by her. At Melody Lane, a notorious club, Jennifer falls in love with Nikolai, singer of an unknown rock band: the two run away together. When Needy returns home, she finds her friend covered in blood and hungry for raw meat. And so murders begin to take place in the city.

Smooth film, even if conventional. It fits at classic themes of youth horror: the discovery of sexuality, the relationship between the ugly duckling and the bellona and so on. However, there is no shortage of funny moments and Megan Fox’s sensuality is certainly magnetic. Lance Henriksen’s lightning-fast cameo in the finale is appreciable.

1 – The Nightmare Before Christmas

Impossible not to include it in such a list, necessarily in the first place. This movie is a great classic that can be seen in any season and period, but especially on Halloween. It is a 1993 animated film directed by Henry Selick (not Tim Burton, who in any case conceived and produced it) made with the stop-motion technique using puppets moved by hand by the animators, constantly recorded and edited frame afterwards. frame.

The film tells the adventures of Jack Skellington, the king of the city of Halloween, who organizes the homonymous party every year. After casually discovering the existence, in a parallel world, of a party dedicated to Christmas, he decides to bring this new, more cheerful holiday to his fellow citizens, with unfortunate results. The soundtrack was created entirely by Danny Elfman, and that’s just one of the many reasons to see this movie.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Special Effects and a Golden Globe for Best Original Column. He did not win them, but in return he received other prestigious awards and, above all, the status of an eternal cult.
