What is HDMI 2.1?

To benefit from the 4K @ 120Hz that the hardware of Xbox Series X can deliver, your new TV must have at least one HDMI 2.1 port, which at the moment is present only in very few TV models, being a technology presented for a short time.

The main innovations introduced by HDMI 2.1 I’m:

  • 8K@120Hz
  • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), acronym for Variable Refresh Rate: synchronizes the frequency in Hz of the TV with the FPS delivered by the console’s GPU. This is to prevent the so-called tearing, an artifact that occurs when a single frame displayed on the screen contains information from two or more frames
  • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which stands for Auto Low Latency Mode: Causes there to be zero lag between controller input and on-screen action by automatically activating the Game mode when it detects a game in progress
  • HDR Dinamico: dynamic metadata makes the TV adjust the brightness according to the scene being viewed, changing it frame by frame. Up to HDMI 2.0, we only had static metadata for standard HDR on HDMI, which set a standard brightness level for all scenes.

Make sure you have gods HDMI cables compatible with the new standard, able to transfer at least 40Gbps.

Can I use the Xbox Series X on my HDMI 2.0 TV?

The answer is Yup, Xbox Series X can be used without problems with any TV with HDMI inputs, but you will not be able to use all the features of HDMI 2.1 described above.

Connect the Xbox Series X through a door HDMI 2.0 or 1.4 will allow you to play in any way 4K @ 60Hz with active HDR.

Currently, only a few titles support 120Hz, including:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Gears 5
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  • King Oddball
  • Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  • Orphan of the Machine
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • The Touryst

This list will expand over the next few months, but as you can see, for the moment the Most of the available titles do not require a TV with a 120Hz refresh rate.
