In fact, the company revealed to us that indeed they were working on a successor to the i8or the BMW I16. The fact that it was called with a capital I and not a lower case indicates how much they were aiming for this car.

The person responsible for design spoke about the I16 Domagoj Dukec, who told us that the new sports car was ready to be put on the market. He also added that they had managed to complete the car in 12 months (it seems impossible, yet they managed it). The design of the BMW I16 it drew inspiration from that of the M1. While it’s hard to believe that she was ready in 12 months, Dukec explained that this was possible because they used the BMW i8’s carbon monocoque chassis as a basis to build the I16. The reason this car never saw life is the period in which it was supposed to come out.
As we well know, 2020 was a very drastic year due to the Covid pandemic. In that period, the world had completely stopped and, considering that the BMW I16 was intended for a part of the niche clientele, creating it would have been too high and unnecessary an expense. From the series of sketches and drafts that the BMW designer published, we can understand that the proportions of the BMW I16 were inspired by those of the concept BMW Vision M Next del 2019, including the two-tone livery. We don’t know what the engine chosen for the new model should have been, but according to some rumors it would still have had a Plug-in powertrain but with a higher power than that offered by the BMW i8, i.e. 374 HP.
