Fresh from the extraordinary global success of Barbie, Greta Gerwig will be the President of the Jury of the next edition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival
The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is tinged with pink in every sense, with the appointment of Greta Gerwig as President of the Jury of the prestigious film event. Gerwig, whose latest film about the Mattel Barbie doll grossed $1.4 billion at the global box office and made hoard of Golden Globe nominations, is the first American director to assume the role of President of the Jury. The news was released with a press release and quickly went around the web, landing on social media, where posts with photos of the forty-year-old director, the second youngest President of the Jury after Sophia Lorenwho received this honor in 1966, at the age of 31.

The actress and director commented on the news of her nomination as follows:
I love films: I love making them, I love going to them, I love talking about them. As a cinephile, Cannes has always been the pinnacle of what the universal language of cinema can be. Being in a place of vulnerability, in a dark theater full of strangers, watching a brand new movie is my favorite place. I am amazed, excited and honored to serve as president of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. I can’t wait to see what journeys are in store for all of us!
The president of Cannes Iris Knobloch and the delegate Thierry Frémaux they explained that the choice of Gerwig was natural because the director represents the state of the seventh art today and with her career – which began less than 15 years ago – she is bringing a breath of renewal and freshness in world cinema:
This is an obvious choice, since Greta Gerwig so boldly embodies the renewal of world cinema, of which Cannes is a precursor and sounding board every year. Beyond the seventh art, she is also the representative of an era that is breaking down barriers and mixing genres, thus elevating the values of intelligence and humanism
Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is with the acclaimed Lady Birdin 2017: the film earned her 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Director and also subsequent films, Little Women e Barbie, have consecrated her as one of the best-known filmmakers to the public and critics, as well as the director who with her film has grossed the most in the history of world cinema. Gerwig is also the fifth woman to chair the jury of the Cannes Film Festival after Olivia de Havilland (1965), Sophia Loren (1966), Jane Campion (2014) and Cate Blanchett (2018).
