Canon has introduced a fresh range of cinema prime lenses, using RF mount technology, which takes inspiration from the current EF mount CN-E Prime and PL mount Sumire Prime lens series
These seven new models mark an important step forward as they represent the first Canon cinema lenses to adopt theRF connection. They offer an impeccable balance of superior optical performance and features designed specifically for cinema, fully meeting the demands of professional video productions, such as plays, documentaries, music videos and other large-scale productions.
Canon revolutionizes the RF mount cinema lens
The integrated RF mount ensures fast communication between the lens and the camera body, while a cutting-edge design contributes to a more robust and enjoyable user experience.

- CN-R20mm T1.5 L F
- CN-R24mm T1.5 L F
- CN-R35mm T1.5 LF
- CN-R50mm T1.3 LF
- CN-R85mm T1.3 L F
- CN-R135mm T2.2 L F
The new Canon cinema lenses are fully compatible with EOS C70 RF cinema cameras (launched in November 2020) and EOS R5 C1 (launched in March 2022). Similar to EF mount Prime series lenses, full integration with the RF mount allows operators to control magnification, correct chromatic aberrations and peripheral illumination, as well as use Dual Pixel Focus guidance directly from the camera.
These new lenses are also equipped with a distortion correction function, which makes video production more efficient both when shooting on location and in post-production editing.
These lenses offer exceptional optical performance and high-quality color reproduction, making them suitable for use with 4K and 8K video cameras thanks to the use of large-diameter aspherical lenses and anomalous dispersion glass optical elements.
Their compatibility with large-format full-frame sensors, bright T-stops and 11-blade aperture allow for a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject with natural, soft blur.
With consistent color balance across the series, it’s easy to adjust color tones when switching lenses while shooting the same scene. Furthermore, the operating rings of the new lenses offer a feeling of precision and fluidity in the adjustments required in cinematographic shooting.
The uniform design of the series, including the position of the operating rings, the diameter of the lens and the rotation angle (operating angle), allows you to change lenses without having to readjust accessories such as matte boxes or follow focuses for each model.
A knurled surface near the mount ensures a comfortable grip, giving users a secure grip when changing optics.
Here are some key features of the new RF mount cinema prime lenses:
- Native RF plug for trouble-free operation without the use of converters.
- High-speed communication for advanced metadata support from lens to camera.
- Toothed rings for precise control through manual use or third-party follow focus accessories.
- High optical performance and image quality for 4K, 8K and HDR productions.
- T-stop values up to T1.3 with focal coverages ranging from ultra wide angle to telephoto.
- Reduction of focus breathing.
- 11-blade aperture creates cinematic bokeh and naturally blended highlights.
The new series of RF-mount cinema prime lenses will be presented at IBC 2023 at the RAI convention center in Amsterdam from 15 to 18 September, where visitors will have the opportunity to observe and test them first-hand.
