Officine Ubu is pleased to bring to the cinema the musical theater show conceived, composed and produced by Red Canzian, which quickly became the biggest Italian success in the 2022/2023 season, with over 100,000 spectators in 88 performances in the main theaters in Italy. The film will be broadcast in theaters on November 27, 28 and 29. Filmed during the performances at the Rossetti Theater in Trieste and at the Gran Teatro Geox in Padua between February and March 2023, with the executive production of Eventi Digitali and the direction of Riccardo Guernieri, Casanova Operapop – The Film is made with cinematographic technique and 5.1 surround sound, to restore the immersive effect of live.

Produced by Red Canzian and Beatrix Niederwieser for Blu Notte, in collaboration with Stefano Scaroni and with the support of the Veneto Region, Casanova Operapop – The Film – like the theater work – paints the picture of a Venice in the times of the Serenissima, whose history and salvation are played out between the bácari populated by various humanity and the rich and decadent Palaces of power. A crescendo that accompanies the spectator in a tangle of adventures, emotions, feelings, search for freedom, affirmation of rights, thirst for justice and political intrigues, revealing itself in all its contemporaneity, albeit dressed in an eighteenth-century key.
The synopsis is as follows:
Venice, 1755. Giacomo Casanova, having just returned to the city from exile in Vienna, threatens to massacre hearts and create havoc in the city with his unparalleled charisma. Meanwhile, Doge Francesco Loredan is in very poor health and the Inquisitor Pietro Garzoni plots to influence the succession to the Doge in his favor. In this regard, the latter intends to get rid of Casanova, because he could ruin his plans, and he tasks the evil Zago with this purpose. While he is at the Cantina do Mori, the Prince of Seducers meets an old flame of his: the beautiful Gretchen, who takes him to the palace of Countess Margarethe von Steinberg, for whom he works as a waitress. Having arrived here, Casanova meets the great lady and is challenged by her to a singular bet: if he manages to seduce the young Francesca Erizzo, daughter of one of the city’s leaders, she – Margarethe – will be his for one night. Strengthened by her incomparable charm, Casanova accepts, convinced that he can have both, without suspecting that the Countess’s true aim is to get him into trouble. Thus begins the daring adventures of Giacomo Casanova, who will have to juggle political intrigues, betrayals and deceptions to make his love for Venice and for the woman who has conquered his heart triumph.

At a certain point, making the film became a necessity. The shows in the theater were all sold out and the impossibility of satisfying not only the spectators, but the theaters themselves who asked us to extend the programming due to the enormous demand, together with the awareness of having achieved something ‘big’, an important project , unquestionably of quality, 100% Italian, about a character, Casanova – and a city – Venice, known and admired throughout the world: all this convinced me to take on a further undertaking, that of making a feature film capable of giving back the flavor of the live show to those who have not yet managed to see it, but also to give a new perspective to those who have experienced it in the theatre, because the cinema is the best place to enhance the detail and appreciate everything that with great love, dedication, commitment and care we have chosen to bring on stage, starting from the extraordinary cast up to the cinematographic costumes, created by the Atelier Stefano Nicolao.
Giacomo Casanova is played by Gian Marco Schiarettiand next to him, in the role of the enchanting Francesca Erizzo, destined to win his heart, Angelica Cinquantini. With them are part of the cast bearded vulture, Manuela Zanier, Jacopo Sarno, Paolo Barillari, Roberto Colombo, Chiara Famiglietti, Rosita Denti, Francesca Innocenti and Gianluca Cavagna.
