Cubbit Review: A New Era for Cloud Storage?

Cubbit is an entirely Bolognese startup for the distributed cloud that promises to change the rules of storage forever. Let’s find out about Cubbit in our review

Cubbit is a cloud storage system that, after breaking the bank on Indiegogo, promises to replace the classic NAS in the next future. Leveraging its cell network for file storage, it grants users a number of benefits that traditional clouds don’t offer. On top of that, Cubbit will allow you to purchase additional storage space without having to pay a monthly subscription. Let’s find out together Cubbit in our review!

New era for cloud storage? Let’s start with the basics

Let’s open this Cubbit review by clarifying the concept of distributed cloud on which this product stands firm. A distributed cloud, as the name suggests, is a cloud with infrastructures physically and geographically scattered in different places. The idea behind this distributed infrastructure system is that by dispersing files around the network, they are closer to the end user who uses them. The result is file access faster, safer and with much less network congestion. Furthermore, an aspect that should not be underestimated (and the flag of the Bolognese company), this solution is much more eco-friendly since the storage is not based on huge data centers of tens of MWatt.

The service therefore exploits a P2P protocol, thanks to the network of cells distributed in the homes of the users who own the device, and which together form what is called “swarm”. The files are consequently not saved directly in the cell, but are distributed over the network of these storage systems, granting the benefits we talked about earlier. Cool, huh? Go on.

Discarding the UPS package, the first pleasant surprise we face is the Cubbit package. To reduce the consumption of plastic, the guys from Bologna opted for a very cute one eco package completely in cardboard. Once the package is opened we find a “welcome to the family” card, the Cubbit cell, a network cable and the power supply. On the back of the package we find a quick summary with the instructions for installing the device. Taking the cell in hand, we notice a slightly “plasticky” and not very refined consistency of the materials, even here, probably chosen to reduce the use of plastic to the bare minimum.

Once we’ve connected our unit to the home router, powered up, and installed Cubbit’s software, we’re ready to go actually test the potential of this system.

After a couple of weeks of testing, data transfer and much more we have deepened the functions of Cubbit nel detail. Upon drawing conclusions, we realized that the swarm system actually reserves for users a great deal of benefits and features that other clouds don’t have. First of all, we checked the actual speed of file download / upload and we were surprised (positively) by the responsiveness of the system and the functionality of the app. From PC and Mac there is no upload limit, and the actual upload speed is on average higher compared to clmore noble ouds. As mentioned, the end-to-end technology keeps the data safe from hackers, which makes the system much safer and more reliable.

Furthermore, the distributed system allows files to be backed up both on the network and locally, so as not to lose data due to hardware problems of the device. One of the functions that we have appreciated the most, for exchanging data, is it “share with password” thanks to which it is possible to exchange files with friends / customers by setting a simple password and forwarding the transfer link. Although a “version control” function is not yet available, which could allow such a product to make a further qualitative leap, it is possible to recover files from the backend in case of data loss.

A question of target | Cubbit Review: A New Era for Cloud Storage?

Let’s get to the heart of the matter: Who is Cubbit actually aimed at? Answering this question is by no means simple. As set up, Cubbit is a viable option for both business and home use, but the problem lies in the price. If in a business (or otherwise professional) context this product can prove itself a real game changer and the expense is definitely worth the candle, in a domestic consumer context the price could discourage the purchase to veer towards a traditional HDD / SSD, although it is not the same thing. We specify that a 1TB Cubbit unit currently costs € 349, a price not really accessible to everyone.

Speaking of the professional context, from my personal experience, this system turned out to be a real ace in the hole. In particular, the speed of accessibility to data and the features for sharing projects and large files work so well that they ask me how I have done without them so far. Absolutely recommended.

Italian pride

Well friends, come to the end of this review by Cubbit we just have to sum up what has been said. In conclusion, Cubbit is a really nice product, extremely versatile and suitable for mainly professional needs, but also for home use. The only variable, as already mentioned, lies in the price not really accessible to all but still appropriate for the amount of features that Cubbit offers. Too bad for the absence of the version control that could add more meat to the fire, but we are confident in the guys from Bologna for the near future. If you haven’t figured this out yet, we strongly recommend that you get a copy of Cubbit here before the further price increase. In addition, Cubbit can be purchased at a discount only for you readers of TechGameWorld.com at a discount for a limited period using the discount code TUTTOTEK40.
