Disney CEO Bob Iger declares his choice to cancel some planned films because they were not considered good enough
During the 2024 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, Disney CEO Bob Iger reveals his choice to cancel several products in recent months because they were not considered good enough. The desire is to bring the company back to the quality levels it had before the pandemic. There is the desire to reconfirm itself as number one at the box office, and defend the intellectual property you own. To do this you need to spend a lot of time in the company of the creators, watch the films and commit to a process aimed at improvement.
Disney is committed to improving the quality of its films
Under no circumstances should there be an obstacle to the creation of something great, which is why we must give the green light only for projects you really believe in. We must aim for quality and this is why projects that were being worked on were cancelled:
You have to eliminate things that you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this industry, because either you’re starting out, or you have sunk costs, or it’s a relationship with your employees or the creative community. It’s not an easy thing, but you have to make difficult decisions. We have made these difficult choices. We haven’t said it publicly, but we have already abandoned some projects that didn’t seem strong enough to us.
Bob Iger even admitted that Disney has produced too many sequels in recent years, so they will backtrack and only produce them if there is a strong enough story to merit them. Furthermore, he spoke about the competition at Netflix stating that they would like to reach the same levels in terms of technological capacity, especially now that they have the resources to develop this technology.
