Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney says he is “exhausted and overwhelmed” precisely because of the various box office flops which followed one another this year. In 2023, in fact, Disney recorded some real flops, something that the house of Mickey Mouse had not seen for several years. Reports are that Walt Disney’s company lost around $900 million due to numerous films not turning out to live up to expectations. Bob Iger, in fact, returned to duty last November precisely in order to save the company which is really struggling to bear the weight of the multinational’s problems, which include: a decrease in subscribers to the Disney+ streaming platform, a reduction in visits to Disney World theme parks and recent box office failures.
Disney’s false hopes to emerge from the crisis
At the beginning of the year Disney had put out a schedule a series of films that gave rise to hopeand: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny, the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid and the animated film Elemental.
Too bad that the a large majority of these films turned out to be box office disappointments. In fact, all of these films have received mixed or negative reviews from audiences as well as critics, which they have discouraged those who had not yet gone to the theater to see them live. It is also probable that the aforementioned titles have created a kind of saturation among the public, who are bored by always seeing the same characters and the same stories brought to the screen even if in a different context. We’ll see if Disney will be able to resolve this crisis in the coming months thanks to the films already planned for the winter.
