Equinix and Continental have signed a partnership which aims to reduce road accidents thanks to artificial intelligence combined with autonomous driving systems.
According to data from the World Health Organization, there are about 1.3 million victims of road accidents every year. In fact, road accidents are the leading cause of death for children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 29 and cost most countries around 3% of their gross domestic product.
To try to stop this plague that affects the younger age groups, as mentioned, the data coming from the various sensors they need to be uploaded to the cloud as quickly as possible and with a latency that should be close to zero milliseconds. In fact, AI is fully involved in autonomous driving only when these fundamental data can be processed quickly and efficiently.
In fact, an estimate shows that the technologies used in autonomous vehicles are in fact able to drastically reduce human error while driving, which is the cause of 90% of road accidents. Euquinix will then make its infrastructure available to Continental which will be able to use it for the test vehicles of the Advanced Driver Assistance System that travel more than 15,000 km every day, generating and recording more than 100 terabytes of data..
If installed in the car, Adas systems help it to stay in its lane, to keep blind spots under control, to brake automatically according to different situations and much more.
Equinix infrastructure to support Continental’s AI
Thanks to Equinix facilities practically all over the world, this data will then be sent to the cloud where Continental’s engineers will be able to use it for all their tests and so on. The partnership with Equinix has allowed Continental to take a further step in the development of artificial intelligence. Thanks to the latter, the German company intends to one day achieve its demanding vision that it recites “Zero casualties, zero injuries and zero accidents”.
