Everything you need to know about the 2022 League of Legends World Cup

Exactly 10 days to go September 29the day on which the 2022 League of Legends World Championships, among the most popular and most played competitive video games in the world. The World Cup will be staged from the Artz Pedregal Arena Esports Stadium in Mexico City, but don’t worry: it will be possible to follow them from the comfort of home thanks to streaming broadcasts.

But how will the competition work? Who will participate? How will the various phases take place? Let’s find out together in this mini guide.

What is the League of Legends World Cup?

As you can easily guess from the name of the competition, the World Championship is the most important of the competitions dedicated to League of Legends. This takes place annually, putting the strongest teams face to face (or rather screen to screen), who battle to win the Summoners Cup.

World Cup qualification includes over 800 players in over 100 teams. Teams from all over the world compete in dozens of global leagues to grab a spot in the final tournament. This year the World Cup will take place from 29 September to 5 Novemberthe day the Grand Finale will be held in San Francisco, California.

How will the tournament take place?

The competition can be summarized in three phases: qualifications, rounds, elimination. This last part includes the knockout matches (quarter-finals, semi-finals, final). Specifically, the 2022 World Cup will be scheduled as follows:

  • Qualifications: from 29 September to 4 October, at the Arena Esports Stadium of the Artz Pedregal in Mexico City, Mexico
  • Groups: October 7-10 and October 13-16 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City

The various phases point by point

  • Qualifications: The 12 teams will be divided into two groups of 6. Each team will play a match against another of the same group. The best team from each group will advance to the group stage. The third and fourth ranked teams will compete in a best of five match. The winners will compete for a place in the day stage facing the runner-up. At the end of all qualifying matches, the four teams that have had access to the next stage will be drawn by lot and assigned to the existing groups of the group stage.
  • Groups: The top four teams from the qualifying round will join the 12 already directly qualified for the group stage. These teams will be divided into four groups of four and each will play two games against every other team in their group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the qualifying round.
  • Eliminatory: The eight teams that will advance to the elimination phase will compete in knockout matches with the classic Italian draw including the quarter-finals, the semifinals and the final. Each match will be played to the best of five. The pairings are decided through a public draw at the end of the last day of the group stage.

The players of the winning team will be crowned World Champions 2022.

How is the division into groups?

The 12 teams starting from the qualifying phase of the 2022 League of Legends World Cup have been divided into three groups:

  • Group A: consisting of RNG, DRX, FNC and BYG.
  • Group B. is made up of MAD, EG, SGB and DFM.
  • Group C it is made up of CHF, IW, ISG and LOUD.

The 12 teams starting from the group stage were divided into three groups:

  • Group A is composed of JDG, GEN, RGE and C9.
  • Group B. is made up of CFO, T1, TOP and G2.
  • Group C it is made up of 100T, SGB, DK and EDG.
