FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 – AMD reveals new details

On the occasion of the event GDC, AMD shared further details related to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0. Let’s find out all the details about it together.

FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0

What is it about? FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is a temporal upscaling solution coming in Q2 2022. It is able to offer players one extraordinary image quality it’s a framerate increased supported video games. This technology uses data from previous frames to provide image quality similar to or better than native at all resolutions.

All the details

The first important feature is that relating to high quality upscaling without Machine Learning. In fact, although ML is a tool used to solve problems, it is not a necessary prerequisite for achieving good image upscaling quality.

Therefore, AMD engineers have developed and optimized a series of advanced algorithms that can recognize and combine data from previous scenes. This results in a high-fidelity, well-optimized upscaled image. Most importantly, the fact that it does not require dedicated ML hardware means that multiple platforms can use this technology. And as a result, more gamers will be able to experience FSR 2.0.

Different modalities

We now come to the FSR 2.0 Quality Mode. There are three primary quality modes available in all video games that support the technology, and an optional mode that developers can use. These include: Quality, Balanced and Performance. Finally, the fourth optional mode is called Ultra Performance and is also available for developers.

As far as hardware support is concerned, this technology maintains AMD’s open approach, supporting a wide range of hardware from AMD and its competitors. However, more powerful and modern hardware may be required for higher upscaling resolutions.

Just like FSR 1.0, FSR 2.0 will be open source under the MIT license and will be available to developers as an intuitive and easy-to-use API it supports DirectX 12 e volcano. There will also be a plug-in for Unreal Engine.

Among the titles that support this technology we find the recently announced Deathloopas well as the next Forspoken.
