The final fantasy that never was: after the many acclaim between audiences and critics, Final Fantasy XVI could receive a DLC expansion
With the now infamous “Compilation of” dedicated to the seventh chapter, the flagship series of Square-Enix is certainly no stranger to the concept of direct sequels and expansions: in this sense, being i DLC the contemporary equivalent of the reissues of times gone by, one wonders if Final Fantasy XVI intend to strike while the iron is hot. The developers have already spoken of this sixteenth episode defining it narratively self-sufficient and, therefore, self-contained. Before the launch, however, the manufacturer Naoki Yoshida wanted to leave a window open for the possibility of downloadable content, as long as the reaction of the players is positive enough. You already know what we think, but criticism is one thing and numbers are another. Not that the latter are missing, given the over three million copies placed on day one.
“Sixteen” rhymes with “believe”: will we have a DLC for Final Fantasy XVI?
At the end of the recent interview drawn up by the foreign sector press (video above), Naoki Yoshida replied on the age-old question. The development team is more than aware of the many requests for expansion from fans, and Square-Enix is still “thinking about possible options” in the hope of giving us more news “in the near future”. Specifically, Yoshida speaks of having aimed to create “a complete and usable story from start to finish without DLC”, adding however that “now we understand, based on the feedback of those who have played”. Square-Enix is also working on a PC port, so it will probably still take a good year. We look forward to being able to tell you more, of course. And, in the meantime, let’s clean up the game properly!
