The 53-year-old actor was interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter and spoke about his experience being offered the role and his surprise about the relevance of his character within della saga.
When I got the call to make the film, they told me I just had to sit down and talk to the director Emma Tammy. If we understood each other and I wanted to do the film, they would have offered me the role. Usually this happens when the film is quite bad, at this moment in my career getting Oscar-winning roles is really very difficult, I have to fight to get those roles. We sat down and she explained the character to me, he’s basically the Voldemort of the Five Nights At Freddy’s universe.

I went home and talked to my wife about it while our daughter sat in the middle. When she heard “Five Nights At Freddy’s” she turned to me and said “wait a minute, which character will you have to play?”, then when I replied that I would play William Afton, she said to me “dad, this is a huge thing!”. Then my son came in and confirmed the same thing, it’s crazy that the two of them agree on the same thing!

I kind of dismissed it as too much, so I took the job lightly. When the news spread, the lines at the conventions tripled for me. I had kids coming in and telling me “I can’t wait for you to be part of this film and this series, we’ve been waiting for it for 8 years”. The more I saw people triple the more I thought to myself “okay, this thing is bigger than I thought”. I’m in the trenches of these conventions, the guys talk to me all the time and make predictions: first 40 million, then 80 million in the first weekend. For me it was fun and exciting.
