With considerable surprise, the Palme d’Or winning film Anatomy of a Fall will not represent France at the next Oscars, which is banking everything on the fame of Juliette Binoche
The seven-member commission established by the Ministry of Culture to choose the French candidate for the next Oscars has eliminated the great favorite, Anatomy of a Fall, winner of the Palme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival. Surprisingly, out of a shortlist of five pre-selected films, he was chosen The Passion of Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung, born in Vietnam and then raised in France.
The other films in competition were Goutte d’or by Clément Cogitore, Le Règne animal by Thomas Cailley and A Man’s Pace by Denis Imbert, released in our theaters on October 19th in Italy. Finalists who, in the words of the ministry, attest to the vitality, diversity and creativity of French cinema.
France’s Oscar entry will not be the Palme d’Or
A truly unexpected decision, which probably relies heavily on the international appeal of the female protagonist, Juliette Binoche, by a film that divided at Cannes despite taking home the director prize. It is the very secret love story at the end of the 19th century between a talented cook and her famous gastronome. A few days ago it was announced that the actress would be involved in a campaign to obtain a nomination in the “best supporting actress” category for the film.
The seven-member commission that decided the candidate also includes directors Olivier Assayas and Mounia Meddour as well as composer Alexandre Desplat. France has not won the Oscar for best foreign (now international) film since 1993. The 95th Oscar ceremony will take place on March 10th in Los Angeles and of course we will give you every update on the outcome of the competition.
