What is Kratos’ true age at the time of the events of God of War Ragnarok? Let’s try to find out together in this article
After the huge acclaim obtained from the previous chapter, released in 2018 (and of which you can find our review at this link, adorned with a sparkling and deserved vote), it is easy to understand the trepidation with which the fans awaited this new work. Now, after four years, God of War Ragnarok has finally landed exclusively on PS5 and PS4 (take a look here if you want to know how the game runs on the latter), and, for the occasion, we have decided to retrace some of the past events to try to answer an interesting curiosity: what is Kratos’ current age? Obviously, if you want to avoid any kind of spoilers about the game or the series, don’t read on.
How old do I look to you?
There are many secrets that you can discover by exploring far and wide the latest effort created by the guys from Santa Monica Studio, but among these it is important to note that the developers they have never provided official and clear data regarding the years that our Spartan hero carries on his shoulders. Consequently, it is not possible to determine exactly the length of the life of the latter, but we can try to get a rough idea, based on some estimates and plot elements taken from the various chapters of the series.
Youth – God of War Ragnarok: what is Kratos’ age?
To calculate the age of Kratos in God of War Ragnarok we have to take a few steps back and go back to the origins of the series. There is no certain information on the time of the beginning of the first title, so it is necessary to rely on other sources: according to the Spartan customs and traditions of the time, men usually got married roughly around the age of 20. We can therefore assume that our hero also joined his first bride at that age, from whose marriage a daughter named Calliope was also born. As historical fans of the series are well aware, however, his wife and daughter perished at the hands of our hero in an accident caused by Ares.
Estimating that the daughter was around 10 years old at the time of death, after which (as officially stated this time in the series plot) the Spartan warrior served the Olympians for another 10 years, it can be estimated that Kratos was about 40 years old at the beginning of the first game. Between the first and the second chapter there seems to be a time span of 12 years bringing the age of our protagonist around half a century or so, also taking into account the duration of the events told in the games themselves. Finally, considering that the third chapter picks up the story immediately after the conclusion of the events narrated in the second (therefore without large temporal ellipses), the count of the years should remain almost unchanged even at the end of the original trilogy.
Adulthood – God of War Ragnarok: what is Kratos’ age?
So, as mentioned, at the end of the third chapter, before embarking on the journey that will lead him to the events of God of War Ragnarok, Kratos is expected to be around 50 years old. At the beginning of the fourth chapter, however, we find the Ghost of Sparta with a decidedly older appearance, with a long beard and a soul less plagued by that murderous madness that had characterized him previously. Once again, however, we do not have precise information regarding the actual time elapsed between the end of the third chapter and the beginning of the one published in 2018.
Since it is a question of a completely new story arc for the series it is even more difficult to find elements in the game that can provide suggestions. It is therefore necessary to bring up the Graphic Novel ufficiale of the title, according to which it seems that they have passed 115 years since the Spartan decided to leave Greece. Finally, if we also take into account the birth and growth of his son Atreus, we can vaguely estimate that our protagonist has the beauty of about 200 yearsat the time of the events of the latest title in the series.
Bring your years well
This concludes our article dedicated to the latest effort by Santa Monica Studio. Obviously, as we have already specified in the opening words, what is reported in no way constitutes a canonical data for the series, but this is only an idea based on various estimates, as the developers have not provided any official information on the matter. What is certain is that, even though he is no longer a young man, the Phantom of Sparta still demonstrates a combative ardor that can even stand up to even a whole pantheon of Nordic divinities. When it is said to bring one’s years well!
