Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire was released in theaters a few days ago, we had the opportunity to see it and here is the review which, we specify, we write as fans of Godzilla and Kong
It's been a long time since we've seen a good movie full of blind fight between giant monstersor what has always been the key to Monsterverse. The last time we got to see Godzilla in the cinema was in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (excluding Godzilla Minus One, which we remember won the Oscar for best special effects). Godzilla VS Kong at the time it was released during the pandemic, an obstacle that prevented us from enjoying the first meeting between the King of the Monsters and the Ape of Skull Island on the big screen. Close to this, considering the epic nature of the previous film, Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire Is it as good as its predecessor? Let's find out together in this review!
Deeper Humans | Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire review, the beatings we love
The first thing that strikes you about this film is that this time the director of the film Adam Wingard, (who we remember is the same as Godzilla VS Kong), he focused more on the human characters. In themselves, human characters have always been the weak point of the Monsterverse films. Something that, in our opinion (like that of many), has always gone more than well, also because the key to the entertainment that this cinematic universe has always had has been the clash giant monsters, like a real amusement park where our parents took us as children. The Monsterverse has always been a franchise where we are just small, insignificant creatures compared to them giant monsters who are real deities. The human characters have always been spectators of the great destruction that these Titans they cause every time they invade a city. Here, however, things are quite a bit different, for the first time, or at least since the first Godzilla in 2014, we see the lives of the human characters.
The most interesting story, in our opinion, is that of the little girl Family, the last of her tribe, trying to adapt in a world completely different from her own. In fact, if the little girl lived on theSkull Island to venerate Kong, now that he finds himself in urban civilization things become more complicated, even if he has the Dr. Ilene Andrews as a maternal figure who takes care of her, creating a beautiful dynamic. Then there's the nice one Bernie Hayes, the blogger who works for Monarch and who talks constantly about Godzilla. A character that acts as a comic vein, together with the new entry Trapper, a reckless man who acts as Kong's veterinarian. Very interesting dynamics, but it's a shame in the long run they get a little tiring, we would have appreciated fewer scenes to give more space to the monsters. Note of merit, however: humans come in very handy and lend a hand to Kong in battle.
A rarely present Godzilla | Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire review, the beatings we love
We come to another sore point in the film: Godzilla is seen very little. This is a great shame, especially considering that her name appears in the film's title. We see the King of Monsters at work defending the planet and humanity from other monsters around the world. There are also some nice comical gags featuring Godzilla settle into human cities, but we won't say anything else so as not to spoil. They introduce the lizard as if it were an Avenger, Godzilla literally intervenes whenever there is an attack by another monster. A pleasant thing to see, which certainly remains in the perspective of the character that the Monsterverse has created. Godzilla, in fact, in this franchise he is a hero, the defender of the Earth. Too bad we don't get much of a chance to see how he does it, other than brief appearances at the beginning of the film.
It must be said, however, that when the character becomes more present, he gives us a gift spectacular scenes. Godzilla remains consistent with what he has been for all these years of the Monsterverse. Yes, a hero and defender of the planet, but still very territorial, in fact if Kong invaded his territory, he wouldn't take it very well. As the title suggests, though, Godzilla collaborates with Kong and does so in breathtaking fashion, with some well-shot fight scenes and one Scary CGI. Godzilla's design is always stunning, a sight for sore eyes. If you don't care about the laws of physics and you like surrealism, then Get ready to enjoy some moves from him that are beautiful to watch. He and Kong put on some real showstoppers wrestling fights that make you scream at the tamarrata's masterpiece.
A family | Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire review, the beatings we love
After analyzing the weakest points of the film, we now come to what, in our opinion, it is the strongest point. Let's say that this would also be a problem, given that the film expected there to be a balance between the two monsters, but there it is. So, the best point of this movie is Kongwhich they treated as the main protagonist. In this film you can really empathize with the Monkey, who is looking for a family, someone similar to him. Kong is a character lonely, when by nature he wants to socialize. Unfortunately, being the only one of his kind, he is forced to wander alone. With this character you feel the sensation of loneliness, sadness and at the same time tenderness. Kong here he is more human than ever and with him the spectator takes a journey into Hollow Earthwhere more and more secrets are discovered.
In fact, we see unexplored places never seen before and the setting is breathtaking. There are scenes with cinematography and direction that give us a taste of the grandeur of the Hollow Earth, of a completely foreign part of the world. On this journey, then, Kong will meet surrender, a small monkey of his own species. The little boy will become a guide for Kong, who will make him settle in a place he has never seen. Always thanks to him, however, he will get to know Scar King, the king of the giant ape tribe. An evil and power-hungry king, who kills his kind if necessary. It is precisely his perfidy that will push Kong and Suko to create a strong father and son bond. Laughing it a bit and to create the meme, Kong and Suko become like Kratos and Atreus. It is no coincidence that Kong always uses Godzilla's scale as an ax to defend himself and the child. The two of them together carry the whole film.
Ma Godzilla?
The main problem with this film lies precisely in the fact that it doesn't give the right balance between the two characters. It feels more like a Godzilla and Kong movie than anything else the second Kong film, also because the story talks about him and his desire to find his peers so as not to be alone anymore. A beautiful message, those who find themselves in a particular period of their life in which they suffer a lot from loneliness will empathize a lot with Kong. The problem, however, is that there's also Godzilla in the title, so not giving him the right space we also find it a flaw that should not be taken lightly. All in all, however, the film is worth watching, entertaining with some very entertaining fight scenes. The settings are beautiful and well studied Kong is loved a lot. It's a shame however that the shortcomings we have listed are noticeable, they could certainly have done more.
