Google Drive for desktop allows synchronization of files between the user’s local device and their online Google Drive account. But as DDay reports, it has been having problems for at least a week.
The first sign of the anomaly It was six days agowhen a user named Yeonjoong from the Google community reported that the status of his Google Drive is come back in May 2023, without any intervention on his part. And therefore, all files saved after that date are gone.
For some the situation was even worse. An Italian-speaking user complained about the loss of important files dating back as far as 2013.
Problem resolution
Google has officially recognized the anomaly, specifying that it affects a limited portion of users of the service. Applies to versions of Google Drive for desktop between 84.0.0.0 and 84.0.4.0.
In the meantime, while it works on a permanent fix, Google has provided some instructions for users experiencing this issue. He advised them to Do not log out of your account within Google Drive for desktop and warned against deleting or moving the application data folder, found in Windows at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS and in macOS at ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS.
Additionally, Google recommended that users create a backup copy of the folders containing the affected data to avoid the permanent loss of the missing files. A truly problematic situation, given that many use Drive as a backup. But remember that it is always worth having at least one copy of important files offline.
