Google lays off 12,000 employees
In the note communicating the layoffs, Google admitted that it has hired a lot of staff in the past two years in the hope of continuing to grow. “To match and fuel that growth, we’ve hired for one economic reality different from the one we face today“Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said in an email to staff.
The company then explained that it has undertaken a review of its business and will reduce products and functions that are not “aligned with our top priorities as a company“. Many of these priorities seem to focus on artificial intelligence. With the goal of making “Google products better than ever“.
Pichai did not provide any indication of what those “lower priority” areas were, but said the cuts affect “product areas, functions, levels and regions” within Alphabet.
“This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people that we have worked hard to hire and have loved working with,” Pichai wrote. “I am deeply sorry for this. THEThe fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me and I take full responsibility for the decisions that brought us here.”.
Google said it would make sure to “support employees” while they left the company: this provides a good exit, health care, employment and immigration support for those who are made redundant.
