According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Cupertino may unveil these devices already next May 7th, anticipating the original forecasts by a year. The new iPad Pros with M4 chip would represent a change of strategy for Apple, which would have decided to skip the M3 chip to focus directly on the more advanced M4.
The reason why this processor, initially scheduled for 2025, could debut as early as May 2024, can be summed up in two letters: AI. Apple wants to catch up in the field ofartificial intelligenceand the new chip would be essential to do so.
The early announcement of the M4 processors in the new iPad Pro would allow Apple to prepare the ground for the launch of ipadOS 18, scheduled for next WWDC in June. And it seems that AI features will also arrive on iOS 18, the iPhone operating system (which uses the A range chips).
In addition to the innovations related to artificial intelligence, the new iPad Pros could introduce a new display OLED and a new one Apple Pencil with tactile feedback. Gurman didn't provide details on how it will work, but there's speculation that the Apple Pencil may have a small Taptic Engine to vibrate when switching between drawing tools or use new drawing features.
