It seems that there is the idea of building a new film franchise of live-action films of the Neverending Story saga, a new reboot coming soon
Already in 1984, Michael Ende’s beloved fantasy novel was brought to the cinema with a film that later became a cult. It seems that now there is an intention to re-stage it on the big screen thanks to a new cinematic reboot. It seems that there is a new partnership between Michael Ende Productions and the producers of See-Saw Films. Together they are ready to bring the world of Fantàsia back to theaters by re-proposing a series of Live-Action. In recent years, in fact, what we can consider as Ende’s “heirs” have received attention from all over the world, in particular from studios and streaming platforms. Thus, See-Saw, now joined by Michael Ende Productions to develop and produce the films, has already obtained the rights from Ende’s executor. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman will produce for See-Saw alongside Roman Hocke and Ralph Gassmann for Michael Ende Productions.
Reboot of The Neverending Story, will it be 80s nostalgia?
The Neverending Story was first published in 1979 and immediately became a best-seller in Germany. Afterwards it has been translated into 45 languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. The story tells of a very imaginative boy, Bastian Balthasar Bux who, running away from bullies, discovers the book The Neverending Story. The boy immediately gets carried away by the book that tells of the heroic Atrèyu and his mission to save the magical kingdom of Fantàsia and its ruler, the Child Empress from destruction by an evil force called Nothing. But, as we continue reading, Bastian realizes that he is not simply a spectator of the story, and soon finds himself transported directly into the Kingdom of Fantàsia. The news of a return of The Neverending Story to screens arrives precisely in this period, in which we are experiencing a nostalgic revival of the 80s, also thanks to the release of television series such as Stranger Things. In fact, in the Netflix series the protagonists performed a performance of Giorgio Moroder’s theme on the synthesizer of the first film adaptation.
