Mastercard Touch Card: greater accessibility for the visually impaired and blind

UniCredit takes a significant step towards inclusiveness and accessibility with the introduction of Mastercard Touch Card. This innovative payment card was designed with the needs of blind and visually impaired people in mind.

The strategic partnership between UniCredit and Mastercard has led to the creation of a solution that promises to transform the payment experience for millions of people.

What is the Mastercard Touch Card?

The Mastercard Touch Card takes advantage of unique tactile characteristics, including side engravings that allow users to easily recognize their payment card, without the need for visual assistance. This feature is more than just a convenience, it's a leap forward towards independence for customers with visual impairments.

Obviously there is at the center of the initiative accessibility. In a continent where it is estimated that over 30 million individuals are blind or have low visionthe new card offers people with visual impairments the possibility of making payments online and in physical stores.

The updated cards are already available in Italy and it is expected that, by the end of 2024, they will be distributed in all 12 countries in which UniCredit operates, thus reaching approximately 20 million users.

Below is his comment Alberto Palombi, Head of Group Payment Solutions di UniCredit

“UniCredit and Mastercard are both strongly oriented towards the future. Our partnership, which combines the network of European banks and the innovative capacity of UniCredit with the experience of Mastercard in the card payments sector, allows us to offer all our customers in Europe a simple and linear experience, inclusive and sustainable at the same time. Giving our communities leverage and resources means ensuring everyone has access to the financial tools they need. For this reason we are pleased to announce the integration of this innovation into our cards, made with certified sustainable materials, for the benefit of blind and visually impaired customers. Banks have a fundamental role in building a better world and this is another way in which we want to demonstrate to our customers that we are always at their side.”

These are the words of Mark Barnett, President of Mastercard Europe

“Inclusion is one of Mastercard's core values and the Mastercard Touch Card is evidence of our commitment to building new payment card standards that promote inclusivity. We are excited to work with a partner like UniCredit in creating solutions designed around customer needs that improve accessibility for all.”
