Google Registry has just launched a new internet domain: .meme. This top-level domain is destined to become the online home for all that is fun, iconic and shareable on the web. And several sites dedicated to memes have already registered it.

A new domain for memes: Google Registry launches .meme

The launch allows users to participate in the period of early access (EAP), an opportunity that allows you to register .meme domains in advance, with a variable cost depending on the day of registration. The price will progressively decrease until December 5th at 5pmat which time .meme domains will become available to the public at the annual base price through any domain registration service.

According to Google Registry, i Memes are the very essence of Internet culture and, therefore, deserve their own dedicated space. The company has revealed six partners and four example websites, which have already opted for the .meme domain. These include:

  • Know Your Meme: A site that keeps users updated on the hottest trends in the world of memes and Internet culture.
  • 22:00 Curfew: a large network dedicated to lifestyle, beauty and women’s fashion.
  • Rudy Willingham: An artist who shares printable stickers for creating real-life memes.
  • License.Meme: a licensing hub for the world’s most popular memes.
  • Marketing.meme: Provides advice on meme media plans for businesses.
  • Tenor: Offers a streamlined platform for finding, sharing, and creating GIFs and memes.
  • And other sites dedicated to iconic characters such as Grumpy Cat, Keyboard Cat, Nyan Cat and specific meme genres such as those about cats (Cat.Meme).

The early access period allows meme fans to bypass the queue and secure a .meme exclusive at a variable price. The availability of .meme domains during the early access period was made possible through the site get.meme.
