As for espionage and romance, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is the most prolific example of a story that effectively blends both elements. The 2005 action comedy written by Simon Kinberg focuses on the relationship of a married couple who discover that they are both spies for competing agencies. The simple yet electric premise created a fun and charming film that kept audiences following this couple through every important, sensual moment. Now, 18 years later, the iconic film is being transformed into a TV series on Prime Video. The series was first announced in February 2021, with Donald Glover e Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the cast of the roles of the same name. However, the development of the project was heavily influenced by Waller-Bridge’s departure due to creative differences in September 2021, a role which was then entrusted to Maya Erskine.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith: what do you understand by watching the trailer?
In the trailerthe fundamental trend of the plot of the series is highlighted: thechance meeting of John (played by Glover) and Jane (played by Erskine) inside an elevator. The two are assigned to carry out a mission that sees them in the role of a couple on holiday, with the addition of an essential couples counseling. The story develops into a comedy in which the protagonists try to go unnoticed, but the situation degenerates due to numerous mistakes made by both.
The dynamic between Glover and Erskine is endearing, even if their arguments immediately evoke the image of an old married couple. Although the premise is similar to that of the film, the TV series is totally different in that the two protagonists do not hide their identities from each other and do not work for competing organizations. Furthermore, they are not a real couple in real life, although things then start to get complicated when they develop real feelings for each other. Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be available on Prime Video streaming starting from February 2.
