NASA is reportedly developing a ChatGPT-style AI assistant, capable of responding to the requests of the astronauts manually. Something we had so far only seen in sci-fi movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey – and not to good effect. But the potential of this technology could be huge.
NASA, a ChatGPT-style assistant designed for astronauts
As reported by The Guardian, NASA is developing a system that will allow astronauts to perform maneuvers, conduct experiments and more using an interface like ChatGPT in natural language.
NASA has plans to implement this system on its own Lunar Gateway, a space station orbiting the Moon e provides support to the Artemis mission. The natural language interface will allow astronauts to request advice on experiments or perform maneuvers without having to consult complex manuals.
NASA, its one dedicated page calling for small business support for the Lunar Gateway, has indicated that they will be needed artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to manage different systems even when they are not busy. These systems include scientific payload autonomous operations, data transmission priorities, autonomous operations, Gateway integrity management, and more.
Being able to interface with a intelligent assistant makes operations in orbit smoother, allowing astronauts to concentrate on more important operations. In short, it seems that AI is changing all professions – including space ones.
