Nintendo Switch Calendar #14: Pokémon Arceus Legends micro-review

Under the Christmas tree, we asked ourselves a good question: “what if maybe” we wrote a second review for Pokémon Arceus Legends?

Our talented Marta Gravina doesn’t want to, but we didn’t want to mimic hers review: if anything, it is the one that the undersigned has dedicated to Scarlatto e Violetto to give a completely different flavor to Legend Pokémon Arceus. It is probably more the technical problems of the Paldea region that make their way between these lines, but we cannot fail to notice how many things can change in two months. An extra two months of gestation, with a clement January, made the world of Hisui much more revolutionary than the sobbing second Iberian Peninsula GAME FREAK. Born a week on a whim in November.

Legends Pokémon Arceus, twelfth review of the Nintendo Switch Calendar

What is really surprising, then, is that Pokémon Legends Arceus is not even a true open world. We are talking about four or five macro-maps connected to a main hub, similar to Monster Hunter. Yet, with two more months of development and one less Pokémon outrage, the development team managed to tailor a microcosm of characters. Indeed, of people. For the first time, NPCs don’t just talk about creatures with an enthusiasm aimed at our empathy; their problems are fanaticism, death, family feuds. Without losing the air of purity of the Poké world for this.

But beyond the sentimentality, how to translate the gameplay? The plot of a Pokémondo in its infancy, surprisingly more Poképhobic than petty criticism of adults who play Pokémon GO, blends into the gameplay loop making us vulnerable to aggression from wild creatures. You have to sweat it all out: cures and Poké Balls to craft and Pokédex to compile by hand by capturing more specimens of each animal. The battle system then received a breath of fresh air with the revolutionary dualism between powerful and rapid techniques… shelved in Scarlet and Violet in favor of Teracrystallization. Such a shame – GAME FREAK should start treasuring the same good ideas as him.
