Nintendo Switch Joy-Con problems have troubled many users, but it seems that the company has finally decided to implement significant improvements
At Nintendo’s Technology Development Division, managers Ko Shiota and Toru Yamashita answered questions about the improvements made to the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers during periodic interviews in “Ask the developer “, which was formerly known as “Iwata Asks”. The two managers proceed to expose the process of building, repairing and designing the Nintendo controllers.
What drives Nintendo to come up with improvements in Joy-Con
Since the launch of the latest Nintendo console, problems have been found in these controllers, such as the well-known “drifting”, a unintentional input to the console, which causes players to move within the game even when the controls are not being used. The Kyoto company tried to remedy this offering a repair service for users who suffered from these problems, but this did not make the situation better anyway, so much so that a request was received by the European Commission to investigate the problem through a collective cause carried out by the BEUC group, founded to protect consumers’ rights. With the new Nintendo Switch OLED console, one wonders if any improvements have been made to the Joy-Con, and the answer comes on this occasion. Yamashita explains how they tested the reliability of the controllers using the same criteria as the Wii U GamePad, putting pressure on them as they were rotated, and increased their strength and durability.
He adds that the internals of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con are not purchasable but have a special design, which is why it is important to consider what steps to take to make improvements. Later, they were incorporated into consoles and separate sale. The same was done on the Switch Pro controller, and all those that were sent for repair. The new Joy-Con don’t have any new functions or buttons, but are now at the pinnacle of optimization. The manager makes it clear that this will apply also for all the others Joy-Con on the market now and in the future, however, Shiota claims that all technological tools stop working due to time and use, suggesting that in reality the drifting problem will never be fully solved.
