Nissan accelerates the transition to 100% electric mobility with the new English plant

Another step forward Nissan towards a zero-emission future: three new models that ensure a 100% electric mobility and will be produced at the Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom.

Nissan’s project for 100% electric mobility

L’hub EV36Zero of the British city, Nissan’s blueprint for the manufacturing of the future will include three electric vehicles (EVs), three gigafactories and an investment of up to £3 billion – great news for Nissan’s 7,000 employees in the UK and for the 30,000 jobs involved in the UK supply chain.

The announced transformation project not only includes future all-electric versions of its flagship Qashqai and JUKE crossovers, but Nissan confirms that the third vehicle produced in the UK will be the next-generation Nissan LEAF, the car that started the electrification of the automotive industry.

Both vehicle and battery production will be powered by microgrid EV36Zerowhich will utilize Nissan’s wind and solar farms, providing 100% renewable electricity to Nissan and its nearby suppliers.

Nissan’s new electric mobility

The latest investment by Nissan includes up to £1.12 billion for its UK operations and wider supply chain for research, development and production of the two new models announced today, including plant and process improvements production, skills training and tools for suppliers. The investment comes after the £423m investment announced by Nissan in the first phase of EV36Zero, to produce the first future electric vehicle.

I three new electric vehicles recently announced represent the future for all three models currently produced at Nissan’s Sunderland plant:

  • Nissan Qashqai: the original crossover, the best-selling car in the UK in 2022 and one of five cars built in the UK.
  • Nissan JUKE: the compact crossover that broke the rules and sold more than a million units.
  • Nissan LEAF: the first mass market electric vehicle, of which over 250 thousand were built in Sunderland.

The announcement builds on Nissan and its partners’ initial £1 billion investment to create EV36Zerotransforming the production plant of Sunderland and creating a unique electric vehicle production ecosystem in the world.
