Refurbed and theFraunhofer Research Institute they developed a model to calculate the environmental impact of refurbished products, taking into account over 10,000 refurbished smartphones, laptops and tablets.
This means that for the first time consumers can access independently verified data on the carbon footprint of a wide range of refurbished products.
The model for calculating the environmental impact of refurbished products
The model is based on three key parameters:
- water saving: the amount of water saved during remanufacturing compared to manufacturing a new device;
- CO2 emissions: the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions achieved thanks to reconditioning;
- electronic waste: the amount of e-waste avoided by giving new life to a device instead of producing a new one.
The game is worth the candle?
Apparently, yes.
For example, a refurbished iPhone 11 Pro Max saves 102.6 kg of CO2, While a refurbished Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged laptop saves 872.9 kg of CO2.
The new model was compared with that of a pilot study carried out last year and the results are extremely interesting because the saving potential is higher than that estimated in the past: for smartphones, for example, a CO2 saving of 81%, a water saving of 88% and an e-waste saving of 79%.
Refurbed: a concrete commitment to sustainability
However, refurbed's commitment does not end here.
The company not only extends the life cycle of electronic products and promotes their reuse but also works to put pressure on institutions to obtain policies that favor the repair and reconditioning of electronic devices.
The company also supports projects to reduce CO2 emissions, recycle electronic waste and protect the environment; Furthermore, it regularly publishes reports on the environmental impact of its activity.
To all this we now add the model for calculating the environmental impact of refurbished products which aims to help users make increasingly informed choices.
