IThe Oculus Go bootloader will be unlocked. In this way, headset users will have the opportunity to rely on a full root access to the software compartment of the device. Even when the official support has ended, the Oculus Go will be able to continue to record news thanks to the support provided by the developer community which, potentially, can extend the life cycle of the device. The confirmation regarding the choice to unlock the Oculus Go came from John Carmack, CTO of Oculus since 2019.

Originally launched in 2018, theOculus Go it exited the market last year after being replaced by the Oculus Quest. For the future, however, unlocking the bootloader will guarantee a significant increase in the potential of the headset. The developer community will be able to better support the device with new software features that will enrich the user experience. The end of official support, therefore, will not lead to the end of Go’s “career”.
The Go unlock will come in the near future via an aggiornamento software. It should be noted that Carmack, answering user questions, confirmed that the release will only concern the Go. In the future, however, this novelty could represent a precedent for other Oculus devices as well. Further updates on the issue, therefore, should emerge over the next few weeks. We will see if in the future the same fate will also befall other Oculus devices.

This opens up the ability to repurpose the hardware for more things today, and means that a randomly discovered shrink wrapped headset twenty years from now will be able to update to the final software version, long after over-the-air update servers have been shut down.
