The surprising comedy-drama series restarts with a new case of a murder mystery. In addition to rediscovering the consolidated trio of protagonists, there is also great curiosity for some prominent new entries. In the wake of true crime, but with the intention of deconstructing its schemes and parodying its conclusionsOnly Murders in the Building exploits that insatiable involvement typical of the genre also aiming for (self) irony.

Plot and Trailer | Only Murders in the Building 3 review: start of the season

The last episode of the second season released featured the trio of protagonists of Charles, Oliver and Mabel (played by Steve Martin, Martin Short e Selena Gomez) solve the intricate murder of Bunny, the administrator of the luxurious building, and give a hopeful swerve towards their future, with a second opportunity for Oliver to make it on Broadway. The debut of Oliver’s new show entitled Death Rattle, however, takes an unexpected turn right from the opening of the curtain. As in the best detective stories, blood and murders pursue the protagonists who cannot find a way out. The protagonist of the show, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), collapses to the ground to the astonishment of the theater which becomes the scene of the crime. But… There is a twist, or rather a double twist that we don’t want to reveal. And the third season opens like this, with a new crime and a new case that doesn’t take long to surprise.

From the beginning of the season it emerges that the relationship between the protagonists has changed, in particular that between the “old people” (Charles and Oliver) and the young Mabel. For the first time the harmony of the bizarre team is questioned and everyone is oriented towards their own realization. In the first bars, the trio appears further away than ever, rarely appearing in full on stage. fact underlined byinitial lack of the podcast which allowed their meeting and fortified their relationship. It is precisely the girl who, on the threshold of thirty years, is in the midst of an existential crisis and is looking for a way to return to the comfort zone, so as to hope for a new case to investigate. A new development for a character who increasingly represents the generation millennials. All of this obviously takes place with lightness and irony, but it is yet another proof of the careful and pungent writing of a show capable of always being dipped in a bitter aftertaste.

Luxury Additions | Only Murders in the Building 3 review: start of the season

Same script as previous seasons? Maybe not, considering it’s true that the scheme is classic and well defined, that of a yellow in which an apparent moment of calm for the protagonists is soon shattered. However, beyond this canvas, the success of the series has evidently convinced new actors to believe in the project, which can bring a new momentum to the show. Therefore, the usual elegance of the staging is not lacking, a direction ready to surprise with its flashes and the consolidated chemistry between the characters, but to distort the scenario, however, there is the entry of a high-level duo who inevitably captures interest . The victim Ben Glenroy is in fact Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), a famous Hollywood actor, while Loretta Durkin, an elderly actress looking for a breakthrough, is none other than Meryl Streep. Their mere presence fills every shot and their skill, which is certainly not surprising, makes them part of a cohesive and well-structured script.

Then comes the musical element donated by the contribution of Justin Paul e Benj Pasek, composers of the songs of La La Land. A risk component that could give greater freshness and dynamism. In the first two episodes we had a first taste, in a dreamlike key, with the anticipation of an increasingly massive use of songs and music that can certainly enhance the story and dynamism.

Conclusions

For its third murder to solve, Only Murders in the Building seems to follow the precise pattern already seen in previous seasons, where again our heroes are at the center of the investigation, which somehow makes them suspects or puts them very close to the real culprits, in a game of misunderstandings and illuminations that does not lose its edge, although the mechanism has now been revealed. The new characters of this season are eagerly awaited, given the caliber of the performers, who embellish a product that is confirmed as one of the best productions that the comedy genre has enjoyed in recent years of saturation from platforms. In any case and as they say, changing the order of the addends does not change the result, and the same goes for Only Murders in the Building 3. We can only wait for the next episode!
