Prime Video with advertising, Amazon ready to launch a new plan

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is considering introduce a new ad-based plan for Prime Video. Amazon could therefore offer its Prime customers the choice of a plan included in the Prime membership with ads or a paid plan without ads.

This novelty would only partially concern Prime Video, which it already broadcasts commercials during its sports broadcasts and which has a free service called Freevee with a large catalog of movies and TV series.

The choice would be in line with the decision already made in the past by the main competition, which it has today over five million viewers with advertising included in the programs. Additionally, Disney+ also offers an ad-supported plan, and other services have tried the same solution, such as Hulu and HBO Max.

But what is the reason why Amazon should adopt this plan? One motivation would be an attempt to cover the cost of ambitious TV programs, as in the case of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”and to increase the production of high-quality shows to enrich the catalog and compete with Netflix and Apple.
