PS5: the first 8K game arrives

Maybe you don’t know: a game on PS5 supports 8K resolution, however the console is not yet compatible with this standard

The Touryst, originally launched on Switch in 2019 and then released on PC and Xbox consoles in 2020, arrived on PS4 and PS5 in September. Following discussions with the game’s developer, however, Digital Foundry discovered that the PS5 renders internally at a resolution of 7680 × 4320 or 8K. According to developer Shin’en, this isn’t achieved through super-sampling, checkerboarding, or any kind of AI upscaling, and it’s a fully native 8K. Let’s see all the details about it in the next lines of this article.

PS5: 8K is not yet available for the moment

The problem at the moment is that, despite it appearing on the packaging of PS5 since launch, Sony’s flagship console does not yet support output 8K. Therefore, while the game renders to native 8K, it is automatically downsampled to resolution 4K.

Shin’en states that the version too Xbox Series X renders at a higher resolution than 4K. It is rendered at 6K 60fps and is then downsampled to 4K for similar results, although the PS5 version features improved shadows and depth of field effects.

The developer told Digital Foundry that when Sony finally activates 8K output on PS5 with a update system in the future, all Shin’en has to do is release a small patch to activate the 8K version of the game. Sony began “branding” TVs that support 8K and 120 fps resolution as “PS5 ready” as early as July 2020 and the PlayStation 5 packaging shows a logo 8K next to the logos 4K 120 e HDR.

Despite this, after almost 11 months of console life, PS5 cannot render images at a resolution higher than the 4K standard. An extensive FAQ posted on the PlayStation blog shortly before the PS5 launch stated: “PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch and, following a future system software update, will be able to produce resolutions up to 8K when the content is available, with supported software. “
