Rainbow Six Extraction review: Operators against an alien invasion

Rainbow Six represents a franchise that has been able to constantly renew over the years, offering players always new content, an excellent system of competitive challenges worldwide and a great attention to detail and game balance. These elements have earned him the podium among the highest rated multiplayer video games for many years. Now, the world of Rainbow Six expands further with a new chapter in its own right that brings some elements of the aforementioned Siege, but in a whole new sauce. The basic ingredients are those that made us fall in love with this series, however enriched by interesting innovations including the distortion of the battles against neutral enemies (or PvE). So let’s find out all the details of Rainbow Six Extraction in this review.

Our Rainbow Six Extraction review

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction offers us a new, simple and intriguing story that sees at its base a mysterious crash of a Russian missile in the American city of Truth or Consequences. The missile contained a dangerous virus alieno which, once it reached the surface of the Earth, began to spread, generating an army of alien creatures with special powers. The invasion and its corruption hit the major American cities that have already organized an exceptional defense.

To stop the threat, the Rainbow Exogenous Analysis and Containment Team, or the REACT, a team of specialized agents who use their skills and the most innovative military technology to stop the threat. The members of the REACT these are obviously some of the Operators we have come to love in Rainbow Six Siege and who now make their skills available not to clash with each other but to take down a common enemy.

In different American cities, the team, usually made up of three operators, will have to achieve particular objectives to rescue the missing, eliminate the threat and find out more about this dangerous race.

The different matches take place around the plot which, as anticipated, see the participation of a team of three players (it is also possible to play solo). The team will fight against the enemy army in several well-defined maps divided into three main areas. Each area corresponds to a mission, gradually more and more difficult, which we will have to carry out to move on to the next one.

Land missions entrusted to the team are mvery many and vary from game to game. It goes from killing certain enemies, to analyzing alien nests (WITHOUT DESTROYING THEM!), To saving an operator trapped by enemy spores, to defending certain areas for a period of time. Each game includes a maximum of three missions that can be lost if the goal is not reached in time (usually in 15 minutes) or if the wrong actions are carried out. Each area also includes a extraction point, hence the title of the game, which can be activated at any time during the game so as to “complete” it even without having achieved all the objectives. The reason for this possibility is well explained.

If an Operator dies in battle and is not saved by the rest of the team, they cannot be played in the next game. We will have to use another operator and another team until we return to the same map and save it. This is a rather original choice that will lead you to understand, together with your team, when to go ahead and when to stop in view of the protection of an operator or a game that is too difficult. Also, losing a game or an operator will cause an annoying loss of experience points that could slow your progress a lot.

Dear old Operators

Even the sistema del level up in fact it has interesting mechanics. In fact, each operator has an individual level of experience which increases based on the missions made, the objectives achieved in the missions and his behavior in the game (how much health he completed the game, how many enemies he killed, etc.). The increase in its level will guarantee each operator particular buffs and skill upgrades, as well as the ability to use new weapons.

There are 18 operators in all and they bring with them all the characteristics that make us love them in Siege. Each operator presents a set of selectable weapons, a unique ability and two useful gadgets valid for all that can be selected at the start of the game. The ability mirror those possessed in Rainbow Six Siege and some of them prove to be extremely useful here as well. We specify “some” because many others can offer only marginal advantages and very often you will be able to get to the end of the match without even using them once. Likewise the variety of weapons available and the ability to customize them, it seemed quite lacking.

It must be said, however, that the gameplay turns out ifsimple but never boring and was able to entertain us for many hours. We are facing a classic PVE (Player Vs Environment) shooter where the stealth mechanics they will be of great importance. Some of the menacing aliens are in fact able to alert their nests with a furious scream that will generate other enemies quickly. Eliminating them silently will eliminate this problem. The melee therefore assumes great importance but the firepower of the weapons remains the master, with the gunplay typical of Siege and the physics of destructible objects that characterize it.

Extraction style

  Rainbow Six Extraction recensione

Also From a technical point of view Rainbow Six Exctraction maintains the standards of the competitive counterpart. The graphics are always at the top (we played it on PC to its fullest potential) and the stability is excellent. The models of the operators are once again well structured and it will be very pleased to fans of the series to find me as beautiful and strong as always even in this new guise. Very weaker is the design of the creatures of the infection, far too trivial and too similar to each other to receive a noteworthy comment.

In perfect Rainbow Six style, too settings, cities and play areas: well defined but full of details and that gray nostalgia that only this series can give. The music and sound effects are also of the same mold. While none of the tracks got us excited, overall they all fit in well with the play style.

The Rainbow Six Extraction review in a nutshell

Rainbow Six Extraction represents a breath of fresh (alien) air in the franchise, a different perspective to all fans of the series and lovers of non-competitive FPS. Barring some balance issues that we are sure Ubisoft will fix in the future, we are facing a title that will entertain you.

Although we are not dealing with a revolutionary product, the gameplay and character progression system flow well with the pace of the game. The prospects for the future are good and the ability to play single player will make those players happy who do not want to rely on the care of a team. A winning draw, suitable for a large audience and able to show off the charisma and power of our dear Operators.
