Nebula transforms from supervillain to supercop in the second season of What if…? as she investigates a galactic murder that may be the prelude to Xandar’s downfall. The series on Disney+ thus starts off on the right foot, showing itself at least for now as a worthy continuation of the first series of episodes which represented one of the seasonal peaks of an MCU that is increasingly in disarray.
Noir meets cyberpunk: a winning formula | Review What If…? 2 episode 1
In this series, as in the first, alternative futures are proposed for the most (or least) beloved characters of the Marvel cinematic universe. In the first episode of the second season the protagonist is Nebula, who is abandoned by Thanos after the imaginary defeat suffered by Ronan and is saved by the Nova Corps, to become an agent on Xandar. This idyllic place, however, becomes a nightmare place when, to save herself from Ronan’s attack, she locks herself in a shield that protects her from external threats but at the same time forces her into an isolation that brings out the worst. by each citizen.
A dive into the cyberpunk future with Blade Runner-style atmospheres and a noir investigative plot are the winning formula of this episode. In the debut story of the second season, Nebula is called to investigate Yondu’s mysterious murder. While the Nova Corps wants to archive the death of the galactic supervillain, Nebula fears that behind the story a complicated scenario has been created that is coming to life on the planet Xandar. What will hide behind this death?
Nebula’s Redemption | Review What If…? 2 episode 1
The episode is very positive, taking us into a cyberpunk future and with this version of Nebula who is the bearer of values such as courage, the search for truth and coherence towards a promise made. A narrative arc largely already developed in the classic timeline, a transition from villain to antihero and then to true savior. The story probably also deserved a film, with all the ingredients for success: the appearance of characters capable of warming the hearts of the public; a convincing mission; the twist and a very linear, as well as logical, construction of the facts. Once again, in short, What if…? comes across as a breath of fresh air in a moment of creative crisis in Marvel film production.
