Disappointing Epilogue | Review What If…? 2 episode 9
In the season finale, which is also effectively a second part from the previous episode, Captain Carter is apparently stranded in 1602. She is joined by Strange Supremo, who has a proposal: he is collecting the Destroyers of the Multiverse to imprison them and atone for Christine’s death, the great love of his life, and he needs Peggy’s help to recover the last one. Too bad she didn’t tell her the whole truth. The last of the season is an intense episode in which many characters, cameos and guest stars appear, including some new entries from this season.
The series confirms that it bases its plot on anthological episodes which, however, gradually fit into each other. On a technical level, thank you to the most accurate and precise photorealistic animation, instead, it enhances detail and movement, making action or period sequences even more compelling. Yet something isn’t working.
Much ado about nothing
The epilogue of the season confirms what has been in the air for a few episodes, namely the lack of a compelling general story. She missed this season the presence of a great villain, which was there in the first one. The enemy is instead timidly made up of Strange Supremo, who however is more of an anti-hero and is not fully able to represent a threat, nor is the solution found for his fall up to the one proposed in the first season.
In short, in the inevitable comparison with the previous season of What If…?, this one definitely takes a step backwards as far as the story is concerned. There remain entertaining episodes and perhaps incomparable graphics, an overall sufficient rating, but the disappointment remains for the little courage demonstrated by the screenwriters in crucial choices.
Points in favor
- Photorealistic graphics
- Great use of all the characters
Points against
- A step back from the first season
