Let’s get to know the Zelda universe better: here is the legend of the birth of the kingdom of Hyrule, to better welcome Tears of the Kingdom
In parallel with the month of Yoshi, we thought to welcome The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in the best way and therefore to dedicate to the world of Hyrule a series of six appointments. Next Sunday we will say goodbye to the other section on the occasion of Easter, but this will continue until Sunday 12 May. Compared to Japan, we are far behind in terms of official documentation and universal bibles in terms of video games. And although the Italian situation is what it is, it so happens that Dark Horse Books has provided to bring theHyrule Encyclopedia even on our shores.
This is our starting point: to dissect the lore on which the series draws with a look at one of the best encyclopedias on the subject. In reality, Nintendo is very determined to keep each episode of the saga in its microcosm, but this does not prevent the various chapters from being connected to each other even outside of Link’s reincarnation at the center of each adventure. And since with Kirby we have limited ourselves to doing a more superficial job, we are ready to sink our teeth into the temporal meanders of Hyrule. Starting right from myth of creationism that unites all games!
The Three Goddesses and the Creation Myth – Zelda: Road to Tears of the Kingdom (Part 1: Hyrule)
Tears of the Kingdom’s Hyrule spanned centuries of history before Zelda even existed, but in the beginning there was nothing but chaos. Three dee they dealt with the creation of the world. The first, associated with the Triforce of forza (or del candiesin English, avoiding redundancy), is from. There is a follow Nayruwhich has always been synonymous with wisdom. Finally we have the goddess seedcustodian of the Triforce of courage. Creationism is based on what each goddess brought: Din created the terra itself with its power, Nayru established there theorder thanks to the wisdom and Farore had the courage to create the vita.
The legacy of the three goddesses is also seen in other episodes of the series. The two chapters for Game Boy Color created by Flagship, a studio of Capcom, for example, show possible descendants. The Din oracle, featured in Oracle of Seasons, preserves the balance of seasons of Holodrum, posing as a comely dancer (below, left). The oracle of tempo Nayru, featured in Oracle of Ages, puts her brain all the way to the service of Labrynna’s peace between arpeggios (right). By linking the two games, Farore, the oracle of the gods, appears secrets (center). The spells Fire of Din, Wind of Farore and Love of Nayru, seen in Ocarina of Time, also stand out in Zelda’s sorceress moveset in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
La dea Hylia – Zelda: Road to Tears of the Kingdom (parte 1: Hyrule)
Following the departure of the three goddesses, their power (contained in the Triforce) ended up in the hands of the Dea Hylia, along with the government of the world itself. Hylia’s was a huge responsibility, given that the demons that emerged from the earth immediately put it to the test. These creatures served their dark lord, Mortipher. The people of Hyrule could only call on the goddess, who took both her people and her sacred artifact to heaven. The battle against Mortipher ended with the latter’s exile, although the seal would never last long. And Hylia’s power wasn’t enough to face him again.
The only hope was to draw on the Triforce, however unusable by the gods. By sacrificing her divinity, Hylia reincarnated into a woman of the same ethnicity: cousin Zelda in all of the royal dynasty of Hyrule, and (ironically) the only one in the saga not to boast any noble title. Aided by Link during the events of Skyward Sword (the first in the unified timeline), the goddess eliminated Mortipher. However this has placed her, Link and the demon at the center of a prophecy: all three are destined to be reborn forever in a cycle of perpetual conflict between good and evil. The goddess Hylia will be revered for all generations to come.
La Triforza – Zelda: Road to Tears of the Kingdom (parte 1: Hyrule)
So what is it Triforce? This relic of divine powers is defined as the supreme force behind everything. The first one able to touch this triangle (inspired by Sierpinski’s fractal design) is bound to have their wishes granted. As well as Din, Nayru and Farore (below in the myth of creationism), also the triangles that make up the Triforce represent respectively power, wisdom and courage. The division of the artifact comes from the fear that someone was using it for evil purposes. A fitting choice, given the inability of the Triforce to distinguish between good and evil. To harness its potential, however, requires power, wisdom and courage in equal measure.
Those who are not worthy are left with only the most representative part of the individual, while the other two fragments are attributed by the goddesses to the people they define as the most suitable. A triangular marking it will appear on the back of the hand of the three beings holding the fragments. The latter are able to feel the proximity of their “similar”, thus entering into resonance in the attempt to reform a single unit. This separation occurs in Ocarina of Time, which ironically also marks the point at which the timeline splits into three (making Link, Zelda and Ganondorf the three constants in the eternal reincarnation of the guardians of the Triforce). We’ll talk about this at Easter.
Origin of the kingdom and the Hylia bloodline – Zelda: Road to Tears of the Kingdom (part 1: Hyrule)
Over the centuries, the world that Din, Nayru and Farore created has been renamed to its current name: Hyrule. The Hylia, understood as a people, were also the first race to inhabit the first incarnation of this land, even when the goddess of the same name chose to live among them once she became a mortal. It is believed that, due to their close bond with the deity, the Hylia owe the power to hear the voice of the goddess to their long ears elven. Not only that: in antiquity, this was a wizarding people. In the “current” era, only the royal family still practices esotericism, especially Princess Zelda.
The powers of the goddess Hylia manifest when the kingdom of Hyrule is in danger. Outside of the royal dynasty, there are also sages (or virgins) able to practice magic in shrines. This dowry also translates into a prestige that makes them prominent figures in Hylia society. This honor in the hierarchy of Hyrule can also be a double-edged sword: an incarnation of Ganondorf, the sorcerer I know, has infiltrated the royals and has won the sympathies of the sovereign. Swearing false allegiance to the crown as Ganondorf did before him, Agahnim carried out the coup that led to the events of A Link to The Past.
The royalist politics of the kingdom of Hyrule
We’ve talked about Hyrule as a game world, but we can’t quite say the same about kingdom in itself. The heart of this land is represented by the monarchy, which reigns over the people whose only true cultural heritage concerns the preservation of peace in the world. This has earned the territory the high-sounding name of “Land of the Gods”, due to a situation of prosperity deriving from the divine protection. For this reason, the Triforce is guarded by the sages of Hyrule or, in other cases, by the royal family itself. It is an arduous and onerous task, given the cruelty of those who seek his power.
In case of conflict, the descendants of Hylia are called to arms. Frequent threats from demons put the kingdom in a cyclical situation between prosperity and decline. Over time, civil wars also occurred between the peoples inhabiting this land. The tensions have also led to the establishment of traditions and legends, which is why in history the kingdom has been reborn from its ashes and, in some timelines, has been recreated from scratch in other lands. The constant figure in the various incarnations of the kingdom is Princess Zelda, but there are also kings, such as Dartas (The Minish Cap), Dafnes (The Wind Waker) and Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule (Breath of the Wild, below).
